So after my local club shoot today I've come to the conclusion that I really ought to be wearing more than just earplugs! My earplugs say they are rated for 33db reduction, but with some of those shooters and their ported barrels I wasn't feeling adequately protected. I'm planning on using both earplugs and earmuffs, but I need something that doesn't interfere. I'm thinking about Dillon's low-profile non-electric earmuffs:

They only have a NRR of 21, but it might be okay if I double up.

Anybody have anything else they really like?

My hearing is pretty well shot (pun intended). For quite a while, I was doubling up with some low-pofile Peltor muffs and custom-molded plugs. For trap, it worked fine, since I was pre-mounting the gun and all the shots were at a given elevation.

However, when shooting sporting clays, I just can't use muffs very successfully. There are certain target presentations (especially teal and high tower shots) where I end up bashing the stock into the muffs. So, I just rely on my molded plugs.

When I'm shooting pistols, I use the custom plugs and Peltor Tactical 7S Surround muffs. I really like them, especially for range use, but they aren't low-profile and get in the way too much with long-arms.

If you can find a sporting goods store that carries a decent selection of muffs and has some guns, I'd try some different styles and do a few gun mounts with each. Depending upon individual body mechanics, some folks can use muffs just fine.

I admit it, I do not do ear muffs with shotguns.

I started back when the earth was flat using the wax plugs from the drug store, how raised, how taught, what one did.

I had some custom ear plugs I really liked, short version of something, they were not in the vehicle after I went to view it after the wreck...

I do the plugs and prefer the ones on a string, I wear two sets around my neck in the event ...
...the individuals ones - sometime I would drop one in removing to hear when needing to hear , digging the spares out of pocket not always handy, and mine always seemed to end up with ammo/ hulls in pouch anyway.

I also always have a set on me, when I tie the two strings of pairs together.

Too many years ago , I actually did an impression for a ear muff for shotgunners and rifle shooters. I got hurt, forgot about it, and the guy I was to submit to - up and died on me about the time I recovered and got back to the research...

I had a great design, had willing guiena pigs to let me - "here, try this on and mount gun, okay, now shoot...okay stop, let me get those off...okay let us do this again with fresh stuff.." (ear plugs worn, my contraption on exterior of ears, me setting the moulds in containers to keep from getting smushed...). Another one of my ideas never followed thru...most likely one that will make someone else rich someday...

SM, that's kinda how I suspected it. I had a big clunky pair before that kept me from getting a really good cheek-weld and I gave 'em up in favor of a pair of good plugs. I'm gonna give some low profile pair a try, I can always use 'em for testing rifle loads or shooting pistol anyhow. Thanks!

I use Peltor tac 6 for trap and skeet along with plugs. I do not experience any problem with muffs banging into the stock. Can't guarantee that will be true for you. I recommend the Peltor Tac 6- good combination of quality and value.

+1 on the Peltor Tac6 -

I use mine with carbine, rifle, shotgun, plinking, sporting, hunting. Have them handy everytime I go shooting, wish I had them when I started. I won't do without them.

Great for hearing game when hunting, great protection in duck/goose blinds, excellent for hearing fellow dove hunters cuss me when they miss, and I flinch less, hit. My loud, short 12 guage doesn't bother me when I'm wearing the Peltor T6. I add plugs on indoor ranges.

Best regards,

John
