All, posted a thread about some shotgun inserts about a year ago. I bought a set of Excaliber inserts 8 insert set and have since then bought other inserts from Shortlane. I have shot them extensively and needed to post an update on results.
Update: Company recalled the rifle inserts, due to over pressure issues (which I observed when I shot them). So, the 308, 7.62x39 and .223 went back for a refund. Accuracy out of a double barrel coach gun is minute of softball at 50 yards (bead sight only). They all print high when fired so one must aim just under the intended target. Accuracy out of a single shot shotgun with rifle sights is minute of baseball at 50 yards, again they hit high, just like in the double. I will try them at 100 yards this spring. Very happy with the purchase. I would have no doubts about providing food or protection with the inserts. They are quick to put into operation and easy to remove if needed. Rounds are easy to remove, even after firing several times (10 rounds is the most I have fired of one caliber in one session). They are fun and make your ammo go a long way. Seems like they would have the most application out of a double, 12 ga in one barrel, 22 in the other etc. I also have tried out some 20ga inserts from another maker (Shortlane) and they worked excellent with all ammo tried, 410 as well, I also purchased a smooth bore 45acp insert and tried that, accuracy at 50 yards was 7 out of 10 in a 8 inch circle with three out of ten being anywhere from 1 to 2 feet off the target. At 25 yards the the smooth bore grouped at about 4 inches with some flyers being as much as 12 inches outside the main shot group. Very interesting accuracy out of the smooth bore as at room distance (8 yards) they group as well as the rifled inserts.
