So my reloading history goes back to the early 70's, when I burned through what my Dad had proclaimed was a lifetime supply of shotgun shells in one year. So he bought me a Texan press, some components and I was off and running.

Going through my residual stash from the day, I was surprised to see how many wads I still have that intended for....3 3/4 - 1 1/4 oz heavy field loads. Easily over 1,000. Shot a lot of ducks and crows with those and have the hearing loss to prove it. But when they went to all steel shot, that coincided with loss of access to places to hunt, plus changes in flight patterns.....so my duck and goose hunting ground to a halt as did my reloading for same.

I also note that back then, our "standard" load for trap and quail was 3 1/4 - 1 1/8 oz and 7 1/2 to 8 shot. The "standard" may have had origins in formal trap, but what we also used on quail....and used a lot of them. BTW, for me, that was informal trap. I only shot on a formal trap course a couple times. The rest was home thrown......either by fixed thrower or hand. That was mostly me doing the throwing and shooting.

Later, because of the opportunity for reloading, we started buying Win AA trap and skeet loads by the case....both for the loads and hulls. Found out that a load of 3 - 1 1/8 for skeet worked just fine for quail too. But then the quail population crashed, bird dog played out, and with nothing to hunt and now with a job and family to worry about, shooting dropped off.......a lot.

Fast forward to modern era........still no quail.....so looks like most shotgun shooting is for trap, skeet and now sporting clays. Also notice how many folks are now shooting lighter 12 gauge loads. 7/8 and 1 oz loads vs. the 1 1/8" standard of back then. It was hard to find any shotgun shells back then with only 1 oz of shot....and none in 7/8. I note that of the wads in my residual stash.....and that is several thousand......none are listed for 7/8 or 1 oz loads. Thought was.....why handicap yourself?

In modern era, also note there seems to be a transition between powder uses.......high velocity (1,250 to 1,300+ fps) 7/8 and 1 oz on the light load end and low to med velocity (1,050 to 1,200 fps) with 1 1/8 oz loads for the heavier loads. Is that because of rules or?????

Powders I used back then were either Red Dot, Green Dot or 700X. Technically, all still available today, but I'm told the formulas have changed, so same in name only. Load data would be dangerous to duplicate.

So finally I get to the question. Since Red Dot is same in name only, and rarely available, what would be good powder, primer, wad combos to look for using modern era Remington STS, Gun Club etc hulls, with either 1 oz or 1 1/8 oz loads? Recreational shooting......i.e., backyard clays.......vs. formal competition. Something in range of the old 3 - 1 1/8 oz loads......or for kids.....and to use less hard to find and expensive shot..............7/8 or 1 oz loads. **

Late in the game, it finally dawned on some that a 20 gauge with 7/8 oz loads killed a lot of quail too, plus a 20 was lighter to carry and had far less recoil. Some of us old dogs do come around......eventually.

** Powders I've seen available as recent as this week include Titewad, Competition and Nitro 100.

I really enjoy Ramshot Competition. You would recognize it as the old AA - same powder. It is great for 1oz loads in the hulls you mentioned. Titewad is very popular, and economical vs. other powders, as it requires a lower charge. My 1oz skeet loads duplicate AA factory loads with WST and Winchester wads. That load would be fine in your Remington hulls as well. I haven't used Nitro 100.

My favorite 1 1/8oz powder is Win Super Handicap, but it isn't always easy to find. For my 1 1/8oz Annie Oakley loads, I use this. It requires a larger charge than advertised to get to the touted velocity, but I was happy coming in just below 1,200fps. I'm currently working up loads with this. Both were inexpensive, and prices included shipping and hazmat.

I have used WIN 748 and WSF for 20ga.

After sending a bunch of test shells to Tom Ambrust, I have settled on AA Nitro 100 NF over a slew of different primers in federal hulls. 16.1 grains under a 12S3 claybuster clone with 1 1/8 oz #8 shot is doing a respectable 10100 PSI at 1200 FPS.

This has to be a typo.

Good info!

I have a pretty good shot at creating a "similar", using my existing supply of AA hulls having found load data like yours in my Accurate load data. I found a new bag of Claybuster / AA White clone wads in my stash. Will have to check on the actual number. Vaguely remember buying them, but could not tell you where or when. Also have "vintage" Federal 209, Win 209 and Rem 97 primers. If those fail, Midway has been having Federal 209A primers available now and then. Can building something around those.

As of this morning, supposed to be a < 1 pound Nitro 100 and < pound Titewad powders waiting for me at Midway customer pickup. Enough to calibrate my powder bushings and test various loads. If either of those fail to pan out, may expand the hunt as others become available.

And as you might expect, Claybuster wads for 7/8 oz and 1 oz loads on backorder. May not go lower than 1 oz for 12 gauge, as the only shot bushings I have for the old Texan press are 1 oz, 1 1/8 oz and 1 1/4 oz.

I’m kinda in the same boat as far as having a bunch of older components. I’ve got 5k of the WAA12R wads that I got from an estate sale for $1 per bag. I load them with bluedot and 1 1/4 oz of shot. Perfect all around load from squirrels to raccoons. As I understand it, that load was quite common for ducks before the ban on lead. I hunt more than I play shotgun games so this worked out great for me.
If I want to load 1 1/8oz I’ll use a white WAA12 with clays.
For the rare occasion I want to load 1oz I use WAA12SL
The claybuster wads work well as a substitute for winchester brand wads
As for the powders, they haven’t changed enough to make the older recipes dangerous, that said it is probably best to use modern data.

Natchez had Federal 209s in stock 10 minutes ago. Limit 5,000.

To address your “light load” question. When I was shooting sporting clays about 15 years ago, the 7/8 oz load was all the rage. Less recoil thus a quicker second shot. Never have shot skeet but that thought process would apply there as well.

The gun I was using at the time (old Browning B80) wouldn’t reliably cycle anything except hot 1 1/8 loads so I never took advantage of the light loads. Factory 1 1/8 oz loads would function on the front 1/2 of the course but by the last 20 target I would get several failures to feed so I was forced to load my own, and clean the gun after every round.

You can still load up those old wads if you want. I do. And I shoot them at a game farm, at pheasants over dogs. The plastic wad changed all that. Wads took over the work of most chokes and they continue to improve patterns today. In 1968 we all used full choke, now I mostly use Improved Mod. Remington came out with the Power Piston in the late '60s, but it wasn't available for reloading with until the late '70s.
1 ounce load answer: Recoil: 1 ounce loads can go faster because of less recoil. You can shoot 1200fps in a 1 1/8 load; just hold onto your hat and shoulder when you do.
Go to Hodgdon reloading website and pick a load. 700x, 1100fps in a Gun Club either Fed or Win. primers, powder varies a little, but 1 ounce about 14 to 15 grains of powder, in 1 1/8 ou. load a grain or so more and a lot of different wads to choose from.
