Ok, I have been an avid handgun collector, owner, carrier and shooter for many years...but I have never owned a Shotgun (didn't care too much about 'em). I have shot once or twice. But for some strange reason, I want to get one.

Ok, my boss may give me his MOSSBERG 500 (similar to what walmart sells). Is that a good Shotgun? If he doesnt, I am planning to buy the exact same model. Its priced at $199.00.

Is that a good first timer shotgun?

peace,

Please, let me be the first to be coy:

"It depends."

Seriously, the first shotgun I bought was a Mossberg 500. Then a Winchester 1300 Defender. Both on sale at Big 5. Druthers? I wish I'd started with a Remington 870 (but only for hop-up parts). That said, I've always been happy with both of mine. And you can't go wrong with the 500. Right, Andrew Wyatt? ;) Especially for free.

As far as not "spending too much," I wish I'd learned this aphorism sooner: "You only have to buy quality ONCE." (Thanks to whomever I copped that from.) HTH

Handle several of the popular makes and models, arrange to shoot them if you can. That way you will have a basis to decide what YOU like best. Any of the big- name manufacturers (Mossberg definitely included) produce excellent products, but all are different in various ways. There's no substitute for experience... .

But if you _do_ get offered that 500, just say "THANKS!"
