I'm considering a pump shotgun for home defense and general shooting. Is there a decent model for around $300.00 or less that you would consider durable and dependable?

What are your thoughts on the Mossberg model 500 that is sold at Wally world for $229.00 with the ribbed and ported barrel?

About a year ago, I picked up a H&R or NEF can't remember which, pardner 12 gauge shotgun with an 18" barrel for $159. They're 870 clones and most, if not all, of the accessories will work. I've used different stocks, forends, even have an 870 scope mount on it. Never had a problem with it, other than the bluing wears kinda fast around the friction points. Just means you don't have to be as careful with it out in the field!

Great gun for the money.

Moss500 Persuader is an excellent shotgun with a lot of different barrels available. One gun can do HD, trap, bird hunting, or rifled barrel for deer. For the money, a good reliable gun. There are a lot of aftermarket accessories available for those that are interested in that type of stuff.

The model 500 and 870 are both good guns. Very generic, but good nonetheless. With some time and effort put into searching, you could definitely do better for less.
You could also most certainly do worse...

Mossberg is a well-known quality brand. You can't really go wrong with a Mossberg. Same for Remington and Winchester.

The Mossberg 500 and the Remington 870 are both good choices. I am personally bias toward the 870.
It has been my experience that the 500 is less expensive to buy and that replacement barrels cost less. (you may want n 18.5” for HD and say a 28” for sporting use). I feel the quality and reliability are very close.

The best gun for you is not what I think, but which one fits you (size, type, and cost)… Go out and handle a bunch and then make your choice.

Remington 870, Mossberg 500, Winchester 1300 -- Ford vs Chevy

I prefer the Rem 870 cause I started with one. Others started with Mossberg and prefer those controls.

Go for it.

If you buy used, then yes there are tens of thousands for sale under that price which are dependable, of various makes.

If buying new, then still the answer is yes, but fewer choices.

On a budget of "under $300", I'd run with a used Remington 870 Express used Mossberg 590A1 (which is better than the model 500).

That will work. So will a Remington 870. You really can't go wrong with either one ... and a good used one goes BANG just as well as a new one.

New, I'd tip my hat to the 870 with the 500 coming in a close second. The amount of aftermarket goodies to convert it to whatever you want is staggering and not a bank breaker. Proven reliability and availability.
