I just bought a remington 870 tactical. My first shotgun. I have some dumb questions. It only has a front bead sight, what sights would you guys reccomend? Ghostring? Could I instsall them myself? What is the difference between all the shot types? is it size of the shot? and it only holds three shells should i get a magazine extension?

thanks for the advice

Really it depends on your intended use. Frankly, a ghost ring sight would be a great addition, but if you're using it strictly for HD, then you should be GTG with the bead. You can install the ghost rings yourself if you know what you're doing. There's a variety of shot types - larger number shot being for varying sizes of game, (ie #6 for small game) - with larger sized shot for home defense and larger game, (ie 00 buckshot). As far as magazine extensions go - that's a personal choice. Certainly you can easily add an extension, but whether or not you need to is something only you can decide. Frankly, in an HD situation the gun you have bone stock is just fine...If it were me, I would get to know your 870 "as is" - perhaps add a sling and maybe a light. Try shooting and becoming proficient with the bead sight - LEO's, hunters and shooters have been using them forever and they work.....Congrats on your purchase - you have a classic!

The Archives here have a series of threads that comprise Shotgun 101, a book for beginners. Click search, then advanced search. Insert 101 for subject and my name for author. Enjoy.

Bead sights work. I can keep slugs together in groups of less than 3" at 50 yards with one. Others can do better.

Now go read the 101s and then go BA/UU/R....

Gig I was wondering that same thing. My books list 6 shot for 18" and 7 for 20". oh and howdy neighbor

well i bought it without any information such as paperwork with it. I put three in the magazine and tried for a fourth and it would only go 3/4 the way in so i assumed 3. It did not sound right to me either. I can't look at the gun now since my school's housing permits me from keeping it here.

i only had about 2 minutes with it at the range so i haven't even gotten to enjoy or get to know it yet. I figured it should hold more. maybe this will help

Who makes a good light for the gun?
