Shotgun shell Standard vs. Reduced Recoil performance differences?

For home defense, are there any significant differences between the performance of 12 gauge standard 2 3/4 or 3 inch standard 00 buckshot or slugs and their reduced recoil counterpart? Seems to be a big price difference.

at home defense distances, the reduced loads will be very sufficient. 12 ga reduced recoil are every bit as potrnt as 20 ga if not more. The 20 ga will do on all varmits 300 lbs and under at 50y or less (slugs) so a reduced recoil 12 should be more than enough for HD. That is unless you live in a mansion with 50y hallways

The laws of physics say you get reduced recoil in a shotgun shell in essentially two ways - reduce payload weight or reduce velocity (or both). At short range, reduced velocity and/or reduced payload weight shouldn't make much if any difference.

Since I can't know how far I might have to shoot in any given set of circumstances, I'm sticking with full velocity full payload shotguns shells. YMMV of course.

The other way to reduce recoil is by using a heavier gun.

Using this: http://10xshooters.com/calculators/Shotgun_Recoil_Calculator.htm, you can calculate recoil (for ease of use, use 40 grains for the wad and about 18 grains for the powder)

Many of the reduced recoil loads also have plated buckshot, which will enhance penetration a bit - possibly offsetting the reduced charge.

At HD distances, they are sufficient. I would recommend them if you don't like full recoil. I've fired some reduced recoil Remy green box... the reduction was impressive.

You can get back on target much faster with the Rem Managed recoil. Actually there is a LOT of internal balistic trix that went into the. Most Dept.s I am aware of issue them for duty. I can make . an 870 run much faster with aimed fired with them.

I use reduced recoil buck/slugs exclusively. The Box-O-Truth (I think) found that the RR slugs penetrated deeper than the standard velocity slugs because the RR don't flatten out. I can get on target faster with the RR buck, so that stays loaded in all the shotguns.

I consider Benelli as my primary HD weapon out to 150 yards.

Concur.

I have run through courses using both standard and reduced recoil loads...the RR loads drastically improved my speeds. Now I keep my HD shotty's tube stoked with reduced recoil 00 Buck for the first round...the rest are all RR slugs. I keep "full-power" slugs at the ready in the saddle.

I use those, and their commercial cousin, H132 00.

Out of my 590, the reduced recoil loads pattern better than the readily available full-power loads (I get LE132 online in bulk when funds allow, H132 locally).

If I ever get my 590 threaded for chokes, I'll look into the less expensive full-power loads.
