What is the best type of anti-personnel shotgun shell? I use 00 buck right now. But if i wanted distance and power with my Mossberg 500 20" what would be best. If anyone has any ideas or special shells they like, tell me that too. Thanks

What's best? 9mm or 45ACP?

It all depends upon what you're trying to do, and what the threat is. I doubt you'd get much argument that 00 Buck is good. Slugs are also good. #4 Buck can also work well.

Personally, I consider #4 Buck to be about minimum. My HD shotgun is loaded with 2 shells of #4 Buck, backed up by 00 Buck. I've also got a few slugs available. In my situation, I feel comfortable with that setup. I'm in a suburban setting with young kids in the house. If I was out on a ranch somewhere, I might very well have all slugs.

At close range, nothing really beats a shotgun, regardless of what comes out of the tube.

If you are truly looking at distance and power, then slugs may be the answer. Then it is an issue of if you are asking the right question. How far are you planning on shooting? If it's a "typical" HD scenario, how much distance do you need? If you are engaging at 50+ yards, can you justify that to a jury?

yea i live in a suburban setting. just planning ahead for protection from home invasion, riot, etc. There are a few field by my house too, so maybe ill look into getting slugs. But dont i need a rifled barrel for that? Its only my second shotgun, im more of an automatic rifle kinda guy so my shotgun knowledge is limited.

for home i usually keep the shottie loaded with practice loads. since i live in a basement apartment, and have a roommate, i worry about overpenetration. so these loads everyone uses for clay birds are perfect for the close quarters of my home. theres not more than 20 feet in any direction a person could be. at 75 feet those loads have a tough time going through cardboard. at 20 feet they make a good impression.

i do keep a side saddle full of various slugs, buckshot, in both 2 3/4 and 3 inch magnum.

besides with those practice loads theres really no kick, barely any muzzle rise, so i can unload 7 shells on target in about 3 seconds.

Slugs can shoot just fine from a smoothbore. Just avoid the sabot-style, or anything where the package states "For Rifled Barrels Only" (or something similar).

FWIW, the best thing (especially if your "shotgun knowledge is limited") is to get out and shoot a bunch. The value-packs of birdshot are great for this. Shooting thrown/launched clay targets until you can reliably break them will help get you develop the skills and confidence you need. To often, folks will get a shotgun thinking "I can't miss with this"... and then not shoot it enough to maintain proficiency. Shotguns are very effective, but they don't quite live up to the Hollywood image (like anything does).

The most common mantra around here is BA/UU/R. It stands for Buy Ammo, Use (it) Up, Repeat. It's good advice. Very good advice. It might also be a good idea to mine the archives here and read all of Dave McCracken's excellent "101" threads.

yea i have the tactical mossberg 500 with the pistol grip and still hit clays. im a pretty good shot, just my knowledge is.....WAS limited...thanks guys

I like #4 shot (not buck) myself. Farthest shot in my dwelling is about 5 yrds with neighbor's houses and kids all around. At 5 yrds I doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference.

00 Buck for up to 30 yards. Slugs for 0 to 100 yards with the proper (rifle or ghost ring) sights if you don't have a rifle handy.

I used to keep a 12ga for close up with buckshot and an AK with six 30 rounders for "Holy CRAP!" situations where distance was indicated.

Choke Single Projectile buckshot rounds are interesting (buckshot that's bonded together like a slug, but breaks up on impact to perform like buckshot)..... it aims like a slug, but when it hits someone it turns into buckshot (no overpenetration)....... those are company-policy LE-only distribution though.

Loads with defensive capability are not rare, the trick is to find the best one for a given use environment.

Up to about 7 yards, darn near anything will work. The load hits like a semi solid mass, think of a giant Glaser Safety Slug. After that, small pellets lose their energy and scatter faster than large ones. The downside of large ones is the possibility of overpenetration, Given a typical use environment of an apartment building or SFD with a wooden frame and lath and plaster walls or drywall, the possibility exists of pellets exiting the target and harming someone else on the other side of a wall.

For HD, I recommend measuring the longest possible shot opportunity, adding one yard for GPs, and patterning divers loads. What you want is a pattern hand sized or smaller, this keeps the energy concentrated in a small area.

After that, use the one that meets the criteria with the smallest pellets to reduce the chances of overpenetration. I would keep some buck around in case things get bad outside and we have to militia things up also.

This has been covered before, mine the Archive for gigs of input.

HTH...

Having been through the LA Riots, and a tornado (tail end of an F2, and the aftermath) on foot, yeah, HOLY CRAP!!!

My current twins are a Nova SP with reduced recoil 00 Buck and RR slugs, and a Lee-Enfield .303 with stripper clips, which will handle anything in sight out to 950 yards (I've shot it that far on large targets).

;)

I'm still learning about this Shotgun Stuff . I use a FULL Stock Shotgun and pattern guns / test for groups. I tend to leave mine loaded with slugs.

I figure with a full stock I have better control of Shotgun , and my thinking tells me trying to buttstroke someone with a PG only is gonna be a bi...

Still listening and learning tho, my gun like the red shells...

;)

Nevermind buttstroking

just hitting your target with a pG only is a ...well you know. Sure is fun to play with tho'.

And my new HD pump likes those goofy clear shells.:p
