Has anyone ever considered reduced recoil 10 gauge mini-shells for a HD shotgun?

I was just thinking that 1.75" 10ga shells could hold seven #00 Buck pellets, and a tube that hold seven 2.75" 12ga shell could hold eleven 1.75" shells.

The gun would have to be chambered for 1.75" shells so it might have limited use, but it seems like having 11 + 1 shots would be better than 7+1 shots.

Fill up a tube with all that buck shot and you'll need a mono-pod to hold the barrel up. So yes, I guess you could now say I've considered it.

And after you ran out of shells you would have a heavier carcass to bludgeon the massed intruders with.... I'm visualizing Sampson with the jawbone of an ass here...

The Mossberg 930 SPX has an 18.5" barrel and holds 7 rounds of 2.75" shells.

Eleven 10ga mini 1.75" shells would take up roughly the same space

Your normal / average 2.75 12ga shotgun shell hold 12 #00 pellets. I am proposing a mini 10ga shell, 1.75" long holding 7 #00 pellets.

Seven 2.75" 12ga shells amount to 84 #00 pellets in the tube

Eleven 1.75" 10ga shells would amount to 77 #00 pellets in the tube

It wouldn't be heavier.

I shoot a Mossberg Rhythm that holds 12 in the tube and one in the chamber. I manage to shoot it just fine in 3 gun with 1 1/4 oz. loads, and I'm an old fat bald guy with a bad knee. Even my Benelli M2 HD shotgun holds 8+1 with an additional 6 rounds on the sidesaddle.

I guess todays shooters are just a bunch of lightweights?

But in any case, no, I wouldn't consider a 1.75" 10 gauge. A couple of extra rounds of obscure ammunition with reduced shot capacity wouldn't do much for me.

The mini shells tend to not feed well in a repeater . Unless you have upset a drug cartel and they are sending a parimilitary mercenary team after you you don't need umpteen rounds in a H.D gun.
I have a big 10 ga single shot and have played with a few loads 1/1/4oz -1 /1/2 loads loads where a 12 ga starts getting into heavy recoil are a pussycat in a 10lb 10 ga You need a few fiber wads for filler to get to the right crimp hieght

If you need more than a couple.........

If you need more than a couple of rounds for HD, you REALLY need more friends on your side of the social situation...

An 8ga would have more pellets in a 1.75" shell... closer to what is in a 2.75" Although I don't know how many #00 pellets are in a 3" 8ga shell...

You gotta consider that the bigger the gauge the longer those mini-shells have to be to maintain proportion. Otherwise you end up with less of a cylindrical shell, and more of a disc. You think the 1.75 12 gauges feed bad? Try a 1.75 8 gauge.

The 2.75 or 1.75 is the fired length of the shell. It's quite a bit shorter unfired with the crimp tucked inside. The bigger the gauge the longer the crimp, so you get less and less of that 1.75 to actually hold the payload and keep your shells lined up right in the tube. Sure you can make the bigger gauges a bit longer to make up for that, but now you're sacrificing the main thing you were trying to achieve here which is increased ammo capacity. And you're still stuck with the major downsides. A non-standard shell in a non-standard shotgun.

How about that Russian 4 bore pump action pictured in a recent thread?
Personally, I'm considering a 105mm howitzer parked in the hallway.
:D

In other words, I'm OK with my 5+1 12 gauge.

Ya know, I'm thinking that 4-gauge disc shell idea is a good one. The magazine tube under the barrel would be more like a coin return device than a shell feeder. Instead of a stack of buckshot, you have a bullseye-style concentric circle arrangement of buckshot. Stick a big round ball in the middle for a serious SD load.

Seriously, now you've got me thinking.

With a larger diameter chamber the force exerted by the same pressure is magnified over a smaller diameter chamber.

F=pressure x pi x (diameter^2 /4)
12 gauge @ 10Kpsi =136 ft/lbs
4 gauge @ 10K psi = 285 ft/lbs

Yeah, that's just the engineer in me wanting to crunch numbers.

I gotta vote with the rest of the guys here.

Sure, it's fun to sit around and think about stuff. It's fun to talk about stuff too.

So, "What if I tried this, Or maybe that" can be a fun way to pass the time.

But when we are talking about a defensive weapon I'm going to stick to the tried and true.

My 12 gauge holds something like eight rounds with the chamber full. If you have ever had the opportunity to just unload that many rounds of "00" into any sort of target, then you already know that it will pretty much destroy most anything. Bad guys included.

I think that after firing the first couple rounds I can pretty much count on the bad guys to make their best efforts to get away from me and that shotgun just as fast as they can. NOBODY wants what that thing deals out.

So, I'm thinking that what I have is probably more than I will ever need.

If I was somebody that needed to worry about professional hit teams and the like, maybe I would feel different. But the reality is that I'm just a normal working guy and I live in a safe neighborhood.

I'm going to stick to the 12 gauge. It will do the job just fine if the goblins show up. How I react to the problem is far more important that having a few extra rounds.

No, but I bought Strum & Ruger SxS shotgun plus several boxes of 'Law Enforcement Only' Federal copper plated BK shot with flight control. Vo is 1145fps which should be manageable out of 6.5lb shotgun with plastic butt plate. I was thinking of Joe Biden and Mexican mini shells when I pick up that one!
