Normally I carry a 12 ga. shot-gun with 3 rounds of buckshot (max # of cartridges allowed), but recently a friend said carrying an SKS with 5 rounds (also max #) would be more effective - his reasoning being two more rounds and faster reload time. I still like the "scatter" approach myself.

Considering the animals, which would you think better, and why? So far, I have only had to disuade one rather persistant bear.

How about a Marlin lever-action guide gun with 5 rounds of .45-70 or .450 Marlin?

That's my "if I was on a desert island with a bear" gun.

Basically with bear, think HEAVY bullets.

I'd go with 7.62x39 versus buckshot. I'm guessing that 7.62x39's got better penetration properties than buckshot pellets, due to a more modern bullet shape. Also better effective range, and rate-of-fire.
