I've been trying to talk my dad into buying an EOTECH for a really long time. The other day at a gun show we saw an really clean used eotech (I can't recall the model number, but it used type N batteries and was not NVG compatable) for $200. The seller didn't have batteries in the sight but he told us that we could buy it and go test it and if it didn't work, he would refund the money so we bought it. When we put batteries in it, it looked like it was fine, but then when we got outside, we discovered that even on the highest brightness, the reticle absolutely dissapeared. I've never owned anyting but cheap BSA dot sights, and even those worked fine in the sunlight, and I can't imagine that our troops would use a sight that was so hard to see in daylight. Is this normal? We took it back and after a lot of trouble, the dealer refunded the money. I'm just wondering if the sight really was defective, or we were just expecting too much.
Should an EOTECH work in bright sunlight?

Mine is extremely bright on the highest setting. I've used it in all day outdoor shooting events in bright sunshine, never had a problem.
Defective sight or weak batteries sounds like. You did adjust the brightness though right? It's not just "on" and "off", there are many intensity settings from very dim to very bright on a properly working sight.

Yes, I tried adjusting the brightness all the way up repeatedly, and the batteries we got were brand new. We even tried several different sets. I looked up the manual online, and unless there is some special trick to making the sight brighter, it was all the way up.
Are you sure you got a real EoTech sight? Lots of fakes out there.
A genuine EoTech in good working order is plenty bright for the sunlight...
I'd go to EoTech's site and find out how to tell the real ones from the fakes before shopping again, and bring some N and AA batteries with you next time...

i have been using/ training with eotechs for years both in and out the military and i love them and i have never had an issues with them not being bright enough! like the above poster said they are normally very bright on the highest setting. they are by far my favorite red dot type optic.
I suppose it is possible that it was a fake. It did not have the option to select dot color (which would of course mean it was fake), and, having grown up in the philipines and hong kong, I would say that I'm pretty good at spotting fakes. I'm pretty sure this was the real deal. I guess I'll just have to try another EOTECH sometime. Now if I can just convince my dad that all EOTECHs don't suck.

Sounds like a problem or a fake.
I have a moderately used Eotech 552 and the highest brightness setting is BRIGHT. Incredibly bright. Easily visible on a glacier at noon bright.
Genuine Aimpoints are almost but not quite as bright on their highest setting also, FWIW.

Same here with my N-Battery 512..
You have to turn it down on even the brightest snow-covered winter day or it is too bright.
BTW: Weak batterys will not make it dimmer.
All that happens is, you start getting a blinking reticule warning of a low battery, and then some time later, it doesn't work at all.

That's an excellent point.
There's also a button combination that you can press to test for a weak battery. It's in the manual, I can't remember what it is.

I have the Bushnell Holosight (made by eotech) and it is bright in the bright sun.

Can you see any of the reticle if you look at it from the muzzle end? If so, it's a clone.
The clones use a RDS instead of the EOtech laser holo system. I've seen some pretty good airsoft clones. There is one made by Hurricane that is near identical, other than the actual holo electronics. They retail close to $200, which is in range of a used EOtech or new Bushnell HOLOsight.

Uh, to forewarn you, if the guy sold you a fake EOTech, and he knew it was a fake, he may accuse you of a switch and refuse to give you a refund. I'm not saying it will happen, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did...
I've seen it some on car forums. Someone wins FMS roller rockers on EBay, and they're shipped proform crap instead. When the buyer tries to return them, he gets accused of switching them.
Anyway, I've got a 552 and haven't had any problems with it, night or day.
