So I went to the BX tonight and as usuall looked at the firearms. They had ZERO assult rifles and this being a military base that is rare as they always have stock. Further more they are very low on .223 and 9mm? They told me that they couldnt get anything right now and that they sold out fast.

I am amazed that things are already selling out as it takes a while to pass anything thru congress and then the senate and any weapons ban should be met with fierce resistance.

? is, should I be getting an assult rifle now, or is this just a knee jerk reaction to what my fearless "Commander and Chief" has said?

Scared..?? Sheesh..
I'm betting you can get just about any rifle you want..though patience will likely save you a chunk of money at the current time.
Yeah..Ctrl c.. then Ctrl v .. for the quoting.
And assault is a behavior, doesn't fit any inanimate object description..

If you want an assault rifle, leave the BX and head over to the armory. That's where they keep the assault rifles. The BX only has semi automatic sporting rifles.

txcookie, you're late to the party. This feeding frenzy has been talked about all over the Internet for I guess a couple of weeks, and has even made the newspapers.

My guess is that it will take maybe a month for the supply line to catch up. Sales will slow as folks run low on money.

SFAIK, Obama is despised by the military, but let's don't go off-topic into any discussion of that.

I just noticed your location. I used to ride my Harley down to the old Chile Cookoff back when I was just a little younger. Been to the Prude Ranch a few times for Motorcycle rally's over outside of Fort Davis. Sure miss the Texas hospitality.

I would not be worried about getting a AR at this time. In 30 min, the defense budget will be cut by 10% 12:01 AM EST 1-1-2013.

I would be more concerned about early retirement and discharge within the next 30 to 60 days. In 34 days the whole government will be out of money, actually they are out now but the tres sec is using your pension funds to buy some 200 billion dollars of goverenment bonds to keep the doors open till Feburary. (Source CNN News)

I would guess that it won't be till Aug before they can get to any Assault Weapon Ban hearings.

Jim

PS: Happy New Years to ALL

It's gonna be extremely tough to find one now.

I don't think that any of this qualifies as a "knee-jerk." This is a full blown spasm.

That's a common misconception. It only takes them a while if it is their job. If it infringes on a Right, then they work tirelessly to see the bills passed. :)

OK i see that its not cool to call these rifles, assult rifles. I am indeed aware of whats happening to the Mil and the chance that they are going to wreck our retirments and or force ALOT of good men and women out. So if you ask how the Mil feels about our Prez lets just say we are amazed and surprised he is still in office. How would you feel is someone was trying to wreck everything you were promised before you commited everything you could to the service.

Old Krow, Isn't it amazing how true that is!
I have not had any problems getting 9mm, now the .223, 5.56, 308, 7.62 are definitely hard to find but are still around if you look long enough or int he right place.

As has been suggest elsewhere on the board. Give it 3-4 months and you should see a bunch of AR15 and the like coming up for sale from all those panic buyers who bought on credit and now need to sell so they can pay it off since they have lost their job because we have a CIC and Congress that have trouble doing basic math.
Long and short wait for a bit.

If you haven't got one by now, more than likely private sellers will keep gouging prices. There is no shortage of anything, its the media portraying the worst of the gooberment. Hence starts panic. Every shop I walk into have plenty of black rifles and mags, at regular prices.

Then again I'm in PA. Obummer has said he will not come to PA because all we want is our "guns and our Bibles" for once in his regime he said a true statement!!!!!!

They will restock, it will take a little while. The ammo will come back, probably quicker than the rifles. If there is a ban in our future, it will be around mid 2013 at the earliest, there is a little time left I think.

If there is no ban, you will be able to buy many of the ones sold in the past month at the gun show in the fall.

I think the days of $699 AR-15 are probably over. Most manufacturers are currently more than 1 year behind in backorders with current demand.

Yeah, if I were in the market for a fighting rifle right now and didn't want to spend too much, I'd get a CMP service grade M1 and a metric sheet ton of HXP .30-06.

If you can find one in stock somewhere I would buy it in a heartbeat. But I would have a hard time paying the prices on the private market right now.

There's just too many guys with deep pockets right now who are buying their first AR just to put it on their shelf in case they get banned.

Thats funny my brother lives in PA and he said their shelves are full of black rifles and ammo. I live in Az and you cant find a thing, no guns or ammo. My dad works at sportsman's warehouse and he said people are buying anything that goes bang.

The BX is probably just like every other sporting goods store right now. There isn't much profit margin in guns, they can't discount them much, if at all, and they have to get them from the same sources as everyone else.

I also have to say, I don't think this panic is as bad as the one in 2008. I can still get bullets, primers, and powder.

Chaps my hide a bit that I've seen a number of threads about price gouging by stores and members looking to sell what they have be it a rifle, magazines or ammo.

A friend just received a replacement Colt, compliments of his awesome wife, for the one he sold off nearly a decade ago (divorce). She had contacted me for help in choosing the new one more than a month ago and it was under the tree when the panic began. I was more than happy to donate some ammo since the local shelves were bare. Couldn't stand to see a fellow shooter go without or the thought of him paying "market price" for what others are already selling.

I understand capitalism but we're in this together. If you don't want or need it, let it be for someone who does. Come on guys, I witnessed the Tapco isle being picked clean! Turned my stomach a bit.

Knee jerk reaction, don't buy now. Maybe a gun ban goes through, maybe not. Americans have short memories. During the high cap mag ban, you could still buy them. I know, at higher prices, but you could get them. Same thing here. I think there will be a glut of AR type weapons in 6 months on the used market at much lower prices. Now is a sellers market. I chose to push a few of the safe queens out. Was offered crazy money and took it.

Don't panic

Having been thru the 94 AWB and knowing what it took to even get it to the floor for a vote, I can tell u this......this is a much different world for shooters than it was in the early 90's.....There were only a couple of AR mfgr's back then and Colt had quit selling to the public...now we have a bunch of "big" name mfgr's churning out AR's....and a multitude of AR shooters. The primary thing to do now....is support the lobbying groups that support our rights, boycott any outfits that sell us down the river and contact your elected officials and be brief, civilized and factual, the same with your local papers. The facts are on our side. Most folks out there are simply uneducated about "assault weapons, guns, etc. Seen several of these panic buying epidemics. Eventually supply will catch up with demand. Best wishes to all for the new year.
