Should I buy a mil-surplus rifle for deer hunting?

Just do it yourself! I bought an 8mm Mauser, purchased the mount, and then mounted it myself. Here it is....

I used a caliper to hold the scope base exactly square with the bottum of the reciever. I then center-punched a dimple in one of the screw holes and drilled the first hole with a #31 drill bit in a drill press. After the hole was drilled, I replaced the drill bit with a 6X48 tap and hand-turned the tap into the hole. Oil the tap and reverse it every turn or so to break out the metal chips.

Once the first hole is tapped, screw the mount on, then center-punch the next hole. Repeat. After you've got the second screw in you're ready to do the one over the barrel. Carefully adjust the drill press so it stops the drill before it penetrates into the barrel. Tap the last screw-hole and you're done.

Doing it slowly and carefully, you should have it done in less than 2-3 hours. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
