First, S&W, now Grock.. with the rate of gun companies selling out, should I start considering a Musket?? Will that be the only thing left when I return to the states that I can buy?

I am shooting airsofts here in Taiwan, they've even banned reall steel bb's. <sigh>
It seems the only places to shoot a gun is Iraq, Iran, Sudan, or Israel.. or that's how it will be pretty soon...

1- Chill dude, you've been in Taiwan too long, and the PRK WAY too long before that. It's really not that bad.
If you like, come visit Idaho, and walk down racks and racks of ARs, AKs, big fifties, most anything your heart could desire. Most of the US really is still the US, excluding the Occupied Territories on each coast.
Now, all that said.. we're not really OT for "Rifle" here... this thread is looking kinda "General Discussion" to me. Which is where it's going if I don't start seeing some suggestions for longrifles or muskets for this young man... in which case it's likely going over to Black Powder.

I would. Don't have a smoothbore and they come in handy when you run out of balls. A handful of rocks or nails or even broken glass works well in a musket. At Breed's Hill (not Bunker Hill as we were taught), the British were incensed at the Patriots for resorting to garbage when they ran out of balls.

Someone tell me what the effective range for one of them 30"ers are??
.50 Ball is pretty cool to shoot, and the holes it leaves in paper, is awesome.

You got that right.
BP is fun and there not even considered firearms. Every one should have at least one rifle & pistol. I own flintlocks. A 50 cal and Kentucky pistol. Plus a few others.
They are so much fun to shot and to load up. Not to mention you get to handle a real explosive instead of a propellant.
You also make friends at the range for having a interest in more than just your modern firearms. And when you fire off you rifle and the entire range is full of smoke and no one can see anything and the smell. Nice. I walk around and say sorry about the smoke and no one ever seems to mind. Classic
I have my flints over my fireplace and non gun owner came over the other day and now shes really showing some interest. I think she thinks its romantic or something.

The last time I shot BP at the range, a lady was upset, I thought about the puff of smoke I left in her face... but she was upset I didn't offer her a chance to shoot it! I wasn't mine to offer, but you are right, people dig BP.
I think what is cool is at line call, when you shoot next to someone who's got an AR15, and their holes look like mosquito bites, while yours look like... a hole, a really BIG hole!

Last sunday morning I took my flintlock and a 50 cal pistol and a Remington Army 1854.
I lit off five rounds from the rifle then the pistol and then six from the Remington. And then a few more from the rifle.
The entire range which is by no means small (width) and out to the 75 yard berm was white with smoke. It was cool. Maybe it was the chilly morning with little wind. No one could see the targets. Espicially the ones for mouse guns.
And the only thing I heard from the other shooters was - "Cool"
It looked like a little civil war reenactment. But its nothing when you get 50 - 100 guys all firing BP.
Now thats Fun, Fun and more Fun.
Then I spent the rest of the morning punching holes in Canadian quarters at 150 yards with a friends 700p
Its nice to keep things in perspective
