Should I buy a S&W model 28

I'd be all over it at that price given good mechanical condition.

What year & what type of "square" grips? Magnas were standard but Targets could be special ordered. '68 & older have a diamond around the grip screw. Diamond Targets in good condition are worth some money these days. If they are the original Magnas they might be numbered to the gun. The number will be inside the grips. Adds a bit of value if that concerns you at all.

$450 + tax for an 80% Model 28 would be a steal around here. They generally run around $600+ for a nice clean one. I bought this one recently at the Dallas gun show. It came from the Texas Department of Public Safety armory (Texas Highway Patrol) and is marked with their identification number. It is like new and shows to have been fired very little if at all. It is pinned and recessed and has a red ramp front sight with no apparent turn line.

I own 2 of these, 1 in 6" and one in 4". There big and heavy but they were made that way to handle the heavy loads of a .357 mag.

The first 28 I had I sold like a fool and bought a 19. I loved that 19 for the lighter weight but there is no way a K frame will stand up to heavy loads like an N frame.

So I found a used S&W model 28 with a 4" barrel & square grips. Its blued & the finish is 80% with mainly holster wear on the frame & barrel. The barrel looks good, no rust noted & no lawyer lock. Asking $450 cash + tax. thought & advise?

My experience is with a 4" S&W 65 that I loved. This will be a self defense & hunting side arm. I will be shooting full power .357 mag through it.

At that price, I would buy it. What's a few months of eating Ramen noodles for lunch? :D

At roughly 80% I would be on the gun in a heartbeat. While I have a nice Model 27 I do not have a Model 28 Highway Patrolman so yeah, I would go the asking price.

The answer is yes. :D The answer is always yes. Why did you even have to ask? :cuss:

$450.00 + tax is less than I have in my less than 80% Model 12-2.

In my opinion, you'll have a hard time finding a .357 mag revolver more well-suited to self-defense and hunting than a model 28. I love my 4" 686, but my 4" model 28 just feels a little useful, if that makes any sense. There's something utilitarian to the 28's dull finish, that the flash of stainless just doesn't have.

my six inch barreled 686 weighs the same (42 oz.) as my six inch barreled model 28. the 686 has more of that weight forward of the trigger.

the model 28 is a brute. mine saw a steady diet of 125 grain xtps @ 1600 fps back in the day. still tight!

Very good price. Workhorse of revolvers. Handles all 357 magnum round and 38's very nicely. I had a nickel model 28 and wish I had it back. $450 price if no problems excellent price. It's a shooter that's difficult to concealed carry if needed cause of weight but can be done! BUY

Thank you

I appriciate all the replies, some of which had me LMAO. I decided to wait and get a 686. The 28 was just too heavy to lug around on a hike or hunting & not be a .44 mag. I learned alot about revolvers which I will apply very soon. That 28 was very tempting though.

Some good info and discussion here, but since the OP decided to wait for a 686, let's wish EMT40SW good luck in their search, and move on.
