Should I buy this shotgun?

I went to my local gun shop today and looked around a bit.

They have a brand new Mossberg 500 that has been laying around for over a year. It is a bit dusty but seemed okay when I held it and played around with it. It is part of the Mossberg survival kit (plastic, cylindrical case). It is all black, 5+1 capacity, pistol grip, no heat shield.

Priced at cost, $269.99.

Should I pounce on this?

How easy is it to install a laser and or a light on it?

I wouldnt, unless that particular gun really appeals to you. That gun will get very hot, very fast with no heat shield, especially if you want to shoot quickly. You can get a wide variety of pump shotguns in the $300 price range, so I would get one that you really want, rather than just because its a good price.

the tube is worth $5 to me.

But I've never seen a Mossberg under $300 in a store.

I'd want a laser on a pistol grip shotgun because I would have to fire it from the hip.

Check out Wal Mart, or Big 5 (if you have one in the area).

Look for them to go on sale for 199$ if you have a Big 5, at Wal Mart you can get the Remington 870 on sale for 229$. And you don't get that useless map tube.

Well, I have 5 Wal Marts in my town, and about 7 other gun shops. I've been to all of them and they all have high prices or nothing politically incorrect. My dad has 4 shotguns that I will probably inherit. A 12 gauge 870 with 28" barrel. A 20 gauge Winchester 1300. A 12 gauge Benelli Super Black Eagle. And a Browning 10 Gauge Semi-Auto. I want something more tactical, more suited for home defense.

I've done a lot of looking around and I've never seen a deal like this before.

Contrary to popular belief, a stockless shotguns is LESS lethal and effective than a standard one.

Armored car guards, bush pilots and Alaskan guides can use PGO shotguns but most of the rest of us are far better off with a stocked shotgun.

$269 should get you into a decent pump more suitable for HD/CD.

An M4 style stock is only $50 or $60 so I'm not worried about PGO.

I feel your pain. I live in the southwest suburbs of Chicago and gun prices run a little high around here too. I ended up ordering my Mossberg 500 combo through Davidson's , because it was about 20% cheaper than my local shops. The final cost came out to $343. I have a brother in southern Indiana and he can get the same combo for $60 less. Even the Mavericks run about $259 around here. BTW, I bought my gun last summer, so I don't know if they've gone up since then. Here's a link to Davidson's, if you want to do a price check.

I actually like that JIC package, but would not use it for a primary defense weapon. It would be a neat thing in case of emergency, (hence the survival kit) and by the way, a folding stock and other survival items will fit in the tube - there's enough room.

If you pay $269 for the gun and an additional $50 for a stock, you'll be over $300 dollars anyway. You might be able to find a gun with regular stocks for that price.
