local pawn shop selling mossberg 500 persuaders NIB for $269.00
12 ga. with heat shield, and pistol grip. the only thing i don't like about them is that i prefer shotguns with a full stock. Is this a good deal, and are full stocks easy to find and install? what is your opinion on this brand, model, and price? thanks.

I've got one and love it. I bought mine in the configuration your looking at. You can shoot them with the pistol grip only (pgo) but it's a little hard on the hands with anything more than reduced recoil loads. Plus it takes more practice to get good with them than a full stock, but it can be done. I'm sure someone else will be along shortly to tell you otherwise however, but thats my .02.

The stocks aren't hard to find, you can order them after market or direct from mossbergs website. I put a full stock on mine after a while and found it's better.

You can also go folding stock.

The price sounds good for NIB.

I have one and it's great, though you can often get one cheaper at a Big 5 sporting goods if one is near you.

no Big 5 stores around here. never heard of or seen one. thanks for the replies. i noticed a nut on the end of the pistol grip, i assume you remove the pistol grip and screw on a full stock?

I have found I cannot use a PGO (Pistol Grip Only) shotgun worth a hoot-in-Hades.

You can buy the full stock from Mossberg, or Hogue's offers their "Overmolded" stocks for the Mossberg.

Takes about 20 minutes to change the stock, if you work s-l-o-w. Remove the 2 Phillips-head screws securing the butt plate/recoil pad, then look inside the stock hollow. The PGO has some sort of cover over the bolt. May be a large flat-screwdriver type bolt, or a 1/2"-9/16" hex head bolt. Remove this bolt, swap stock, re-tighten bolt. Reattach butt plate/recoil pad and you are done.

I just purchased one last week and ran a few boxes of shells through it.
I paid $259.00 at a mom and pop gun shop down the road from me.

It's NOT an 870 or 590A1, but it ran perfectly and I only bought it as a house gun.

Another problem with the PG is that it interfers with access to the slide release. I'd put a full stock on asap. And the price is a little high, IMHO, but it is suprising that they didn't make it higher. Any used, beat up SG with an extended tube around here automatically commands >$300 level price at the pawnshops. No, I don't know why, especially when my favorite shop will sell you a new SG at a reasonable price.

I concur, the pistol grip is a NO GO for me too.

The LOP is a little long for me with the factory stock.
Anybody suggest a aftermarket stock with a LOP of around 13"??

I got my 18.5" version on sale at a local sporting goods store for $220 with full stock installed, and a pistol grip if I wanted to change it.

The pistol grip is really fun with birdshot, but I wouldn't want to fire buck out of it, and I would want a full stock for any real shooting.

The stock takes 3 minutes to change, I don't know how anyone could manage to take 20. You will need a long, flat-blade screwdriver though.

Very nice gun though.

I had to buy a screwdriver especially for chaning my stock. All of the long ones I had were to wide to fit into the cavity. About $4 fixed that though.
I like the PG but I haven't shot it much at all, only with bird shot.
For the under bed setup I use a speed feed stock (which I will be selling as soon as I find one with the pistol grip on it).
+1 for the Mossy 500 persuader. Mine is a 18.5" (cost $300 at a show IIRC) and I love it. I haven't shot 5000 rounds through it (more like 70) so I can't comment on life span yet.

actually, he doesn't...Big 5 is a sporting goods store common in the western US.

I bought mine there for $229.00

I have one with both the pistol grip and the shoulder stock. Love it, it shoots good, I don't mind shooting with the pistol grip, but like the should stock better.

thanks for the replies, sounds like the 500 is a solid shotgun. i might just try to find one in the configuration i want to begin with though. from what i'm hearin $269 may be a little on the high side and then i would have to buy the stock. maybe a little looking around and i could find one with the stock for around the same and maybe a little less.
