Should I CCW at college? Other questions...

The OP is asking about whether he should carry at his college, where it is legal, once it becomes legal for him to do so.

When I was in GA years ago, what I carried was based on my dress level and location.

Cool weather/away from work: Glock 23
Warmer weather/away from work: Kel-Tec P11
At work (legal but prohibited by company policy): P32

The really important thing is to get good with what you carry. When I practiced regularly with it, I could hit a 2-liter bottle with the P11 at 25 meters. Hopefully you'll never have to shoot that well in an emergency, but you should be capable of rapidly drawing whatever you carry, and putting at least 2 rounds, with no misses, into a target 10 meters away.

To the OP: I would recommend a Kahr CW9 in a belly band type holster. I use a 3Speed Holster with my CW9 and it is absolutely invisible. In a college situation you can allow it to ride deeper for maximum concealment. Its very easy to slide higher up on your body to quicker draw. It also allows for you to carry a spare magazine. I went from a typical 3:00 carry IWB to the "belly band" type and my co-worker who also carries asked me if I had stopped carrying.

I really like the belly band style holster for deep concealment situation, like college. Also here in FL its not legal. Any of posted pistols are great choices. I just believe in zero safeties. Thats what we have brains for :) I love the 1911 style platform but I have read multiple stories of people who carried 1911s and having extremely difficulting getting a round off during the moment. An individual from AR15.com posted a situation he was in where he was shot in the hand and was unable to disengage the grip safety. Just food for thought.

Either way good luck and carry responsibly! Its an awesome decision you have made to protect yourself and not rely on someone else :)

I recently picked up a keltec pf9 and added the belt clip. It's tiny. Time will tell whether reliable. I've heard good things about the kahrs.

I'm leaning towards a compact 9mm, but I really have no idea where to start looking, or what things to look for on a concealed carry weapon (e.g. SA vs DA).
Personally, I would look at the compact offerings from Glock or Kahr. THe issue of DA versus SA really comes down to personal preference.

For my two cents I've been noticing that modern powders are able to get quite a lot out of even a very short barreled .380 giving you respectable expansion with 12+ inches of penetration.

pistols like the Kel Tec P-3AT can be crazy light and small.

Obviously bigger guns with more powerful bullets can do more, especially if you're looking to be the hero making long range shots at some psycho attacking other people.

But if you find yourself getting turned off by the talk and belly bands and even PF9s seem a bit much for your pants pocket I'd give a .380 a chance before throwing in the towl.
