Should I polish my barrel?

I polished my guide rod on my XDm because the paint was faiding, and it turned out well. I am thinking about doing the same to my barrel to. Is this going to void the warrenty or cause it to rust?

"Polishing" is just removing the factory finish in this case. I fail to see how removing a hardened protective srevice and then rubbing away the outer layers of the metal to expose bare metal is ever a good thing.
