I have a Remington 700 in .338 WinMag, about 10 years old. I installed 30mm Talley Lightweight Alloy Mounts today. I used the Wheeler lapping kit, and the points of the alignment bars didn't meet. I lapped more off of these rings than I have on any others before, taking off about 90% of original finish before I could get the proper alignment. This of course removed a lot of material from the inside of the rings. I torqued the top rings at about 20 inch-pounds, Talley's recommended torque. Now both of the top rings are flush with the bottom rings. I can't slide a piece of paper between them. I'm worried that I've taken off too much material and the rings aren't tight enough to prevent the scope from sliding under heavy recoil. Don't know whether to trust this setup or not. Thanks.
