I was going to go ahead and mount them up with no bedding or lapping, anything I should be concerned about? First bolt gun and first two piece rings, i'm an AR guy.

A buddy that's into 700's mentioned bedding the bases to the receiver with JB weld, but in my research it seems this is more for 1 piece rails. Anyone bed two piece bases? I don't have an alignment or lapping kit. I'd just use the scope itself for alignment.

For reference this is a hunting rifle, not an F class precision shooter.

I don’t bed, one piece or two. I used to lap but don’t anymore. If rings need lapping I return them for ones that don’t need it. Though I don’t use Talley I’ve mounted a bunch of scopes with them and have only encountered one set that was out of whack and needed lapping. The odds are very small your Talley’s will need it. A torque screwdriver is the first and best piece of equipment to buy for mounting scopes.

I meant to add in my post above that even though I don’t use Talley they are an excellent system. Talley, DNZ, Warne, Leupold, EGW, Weaver and Burris are all good. There are more I’m sure but the aforementioned systems are what I have experience with.

I have a definite distaste for Millett.

Thanks for the reply. I just wanted to make sure bedding the two piece bases wasn't standard practice. Seems it is with remington 700 one piece rails.

These mounts are going on a Savage lightweight model 11.

I have a few older rifles that were bedded but I don’t bother anymore and I don’t lap. I’ve moved scopes around multiple times without any ring damage. As a utilitarian, I’d prefer 1-piece based on all my rifles in 1913 to make changing glass simpler. I also like and use Talley.

I'm also a Talley fan. I've never lapped a scope ring, and considering how much I like to tinker that says something.

I bed bases sometimes, but mostly don't, and I never had to with the 4 sets of Talley I've installed.
