Any suggestions for a good shoulder holster (specifically for a S&W M&P Compact)? The only ones I can find are very expensive - which is fine, but I have no idea about their quality.

The classic is a lighter weight version without the thick straps. I'm not sure how much your firearm weighs but it must be on the light side if Galco is steering you towards that one.

The key to comfort with those "X" style shoulder holsters is to equalize the weight between the sides. Weigh two mags vs. the loaded pistol and see how they compare. If they're close to even that should work well. Otherwise one side tends to ride down. If your loaded pistol is a lot more than the mags there are alternatives like a shoulder rig that clips to your WB on the off side. .

I recently purchased a shoulder holster from High Noon Holsters for my CZ SP-01 (heavy gun) It is a synthetic and called the Under Armor and I bought it because of the price (<$80) and because of the guy who runs the CZ forum who recommended it highly. I had some reservations about it being made of a synthetic product but it has worked out fine so far. I recommend it without reservation.
