I am talking about the real deal, not a home invasion.(not that that is trivial). Out and out chaos. I have read a few threads about long range target aquisition, having 5000 rounds /gun, get out of dodge equipment etc.. Aside from those of you out in BF Egypt who can have a base of ops in the sticks, I am targeting people in the suburbs or cities. How much can you really carry? How many small children do you have that will slow your movement and not hump their own gear. How will you eat? As I sit in the northeast listening to the wind howl and the ice fall from the trees, could you actually survive out there? Could your family? If you are breaking camp, how long will what you carry last? What will you do to get more? Where will you go?
Could you actually engage a threat? How about multiple threats? Can you react when rounds are incoming? Do you know any tactics that have not been learned by looking at an illustration in a book on 'Snipers' or 'How to shoot and move'? You have the gear, but can you use it? How would you break contact with two small children or a wife who thinks that means you can only see clearly out of one eye?
I am not trying to be smart or sarcastic but, as we all sit around in our heated homes with refrigerators full of food, stocking up for that just in case scenario. How realistic is your approach? Do you really have the mindset and intestinal fortitude to survive or are we all talking out of comfort.

I guess the question I am getting at, is there is a lot of talking the talk. How many can actually walk the walk?
Again, I am not trying to knock anyone, just float a question that a lot of people talk about but I do not think are capable of stepping up to.

What do you think?

I'm there. If the S ever HTF in my house, I'm low-crawlin' straight to the wall socket and un-pluggin' that SOB.
I've practiced this technique and am confident in my ability to accomplish this task with a minimum of splash back.
Mrs Biker and I have simmed the scenario using a large box fan and mashed potatoes of various viscosities (mixed with turkey gravy, of course) and we both came out relatively unscathed.

Worry not, it can be done.

I was raised by wolves, so I can eat carrion. As long as I have enough size 5 Huggies for my 2-year old, I am good to go, from the Arctic to the desert. Oh yeah, I need wipes, too.

Just to state the obvious, the above replies are a bit sarcastic, because this gets discussed so often, here. A search will turn up lots of useful info.

Like all good Mormons, I store food and water. Like all good shooters, I store some ammo and components (I reload). I have actually bugged out once, and loaded up to bug out twice more, which gives me more experience than most, I guess.

But I plan to "bug in" unless that's really not an option.

Everyone in my family, of all ages, has some backpacking experience.

Do I train military style? Not really. But I shoot fairly often, and practice defensive shooting skills.

That enough of an answer?

Theoretical disaster threads are not acceptable fodder for S&T. Only realistic issues with sufficiently limited scope are suitable topics for discussion.
