Hey, all!

I decided that since the research portion of this project has gained the steam that it has (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=331343), it's about time that I restart the thread in the proper forum.

To paraphrase the previous thread in Firearms Research, I have three Siamese Mauser actions that I would like to start working with. I called the gunsmith that works with the local gunrange, and talked to him about building a custom rifle using one of these actions. He assured me that he has experience working with Siamese Mousers and that he would be capable of replacing parts, rechambering, adding scope mounts, etc.

The actions have been sitting in a cardboard box with some type of preservative agent on them for at least twenty years. Honestly, it's probably closer to fifty years at this point. They do have some surface rust on them, but overall, they look pretty clean to me, considering their history (or lack thereof). He suggested that I drop the actions with him so he can strip them to bare metal and scope them to inspect for cracks or wear. He quoted me $55.00 per action for this service.

Does this sound like the right course of action (no pun intended) at this point, and does that price sound fair? Thanks in advance!

that depends on how capable you are of doing it yourself. Your actions need to be detail stripped and pickled in acid, or bead blasted. examining the action for possible setback and checking the engagement of the locking lugs is not for the novice.

If your gunsmith is a Mauser expert, who builds custom rifles for a living, I would probably turn them over... If its just the gunsmith down at the local shop, who wants to "give them a look" I would pass and send them to a specialist.

Highorder,

Fair enough. This is all new to me. The only reasons I'm confident enough to carve my own stock, are that I've got similar experiences with woodwork, and I'm a quick study.

I don't believe that this guy is a custom gun builder, nor a Mouser specialist. He's they guy at the gunshop, and I believe that he probably has worked on a Mouser at one time or another. That's about the extent of my confidence there.

As far as sending them to a specialist is concerned, I really wish I knew some people locally that I trust. Do you have any recommendations on a Mouser specialist for this type of job? Thanks again!

well, E. R. Shaw seems to do good work for a good price. As for more information, I suggest that you register and snoop around here:

I just did a simple search for "siamese mauser" and got several relevant threads. I hope that helps!

I shot an E.R. Shaw sporterized Siamese Mauser in .45-70 back when I was in high school. It was awesome :).

Just my .02,
LeonCarr
