Is the Sig 220 so close "mechanically" and "dimensionally" to the Sig 226 that their reliability is not compromised? I've never handled a 9mm/.357/.40 sig pistol, at least not disassembled. The reason I ask is because I just got a 220 and kind of like it. If this works out well I would like to get a 226 or a 225 single stack.

The P226 pistols work just fine. They use the same basic mechanism as the P220 but are different dimensionally.

I've run a few thousand rounds thru my new style P226 w/o a single failure.

The Navy Seals still use the Sig Sauer 226 as the Mark 25. Great pistol. The 225 is no longer in production but plenty of 225 and German surplus P6 pistols are floating around, though magazines and spare parts are getting tighter.

been making them for decades...you will find the grip a bit thicker in the P226 than the P220...most holsters for one will fit the other...
