First Post, long time lurker, just registered. This is a great site!

Going to take my CCW class next week and should be getting my permit soon after.

Currently have a Sig 229 in 9mm, nice piece. Always liked the 1911, have had several.

My question, which would you prefer to carry and why.

Not interested in other options. It is going to be one of these 2.

I like the 1911, the thin profile, the grip and the caliber.

I also like the first double action shot of the Sig and the overall build and reliability of the weapon.

The only thing I dislike about the 1911 is the cocked and locked style of carry (I know all about the safety features of the design, but it still freaks me out a little) and my dislike about the Sig is the thickness of the grip.

So what say you?

1911. dont be scared of cond 1. it just LOOKS scary, but it is safe. i dont know much about Sigs, but da/sa without safety and one in the pipe to me is scary because it is just the heavy trigger pull that your relying on. with a safety and one in the pipe is still cocked n locked(sort of), but it just doesn't LOOK scary. please correct me if i'm wrong.

I've carried both. The 229 is heavy and wide. The 1911 is heavy and slightly more slim. Either works. Both are good (though heavy) choices. I moved away from the 229 to the 1911, because of the width of the Sig. Both will be a big difference then say... a J-frame or a Kel-Tec. :)

I'll voice support for the P229. I also own a 1911, but don't carry it nearly as much as the SIG.

My Kimber 1911 is a good pistol don't get me wrong, but it has had malfunctions. My 1911 seems really sensitive to having good magazines, fresh springs, and bullet shapes that are optimal for feeding. I have had the pistol jam with 230gr ball before due to a bad magazine. Funny thing is another of the same brand and type of magazine (Wilson) that I bought the same day works just fine.

My P229 has never jammed. Not even once. That pistol simply works. If I have a round in the chamber and pull the trigger the pistol fires that round, ejects the empty casing, reloads another round in the chamber and does it again. No excuses, no break in, no problem. Also with the .357 SIG barrel it is very accurate, and the .40S&W barrel isn't too bad either. Now on a target range it won't keep up with the my Kimber Super Match, but it wasn't designed to be a target gun.

FYI mine is equipped with the DAK trigger because I want a consistent trigger pull for every shot. I like it fairly well, but might convert it to DA/SA in the future.

You might also consider the P220 Carry if you like .45's those are really nice pistols too.

Unfortunately no it can't the face of the slide is too small to accommodate the larger rounds, so you would have to get a new slide assembly. The frame will accept the magazines though no problem.

The most versatile P229 is the .40 or .357SIG because even thought the face of the slide is oversized for 9mm a 9mm conversion barrel from Bar-Sto will still work in a .40/.357 P229 all you need are the barrel and the appropriate SIG magazines and you're in business.

I shoot IDPA with my 229, and I have about 2000 rounds throught it now. It has never failed. I don't have that kind of faith in the 1911.
I also have a problem with cocked and locked. I know it's safe, I just have a problem with it.

You can put a 9mm conversion barrel in a .40/.357 gun, but you can't go the other way.
