Take my abilities (or lack there of) out of the equation. Would I be competitive in IDPA with standard 8-round magazines in a Sig 239? Or will the 8-round magazines place me at an automatic disadvantage?

The 8 round magazines could put you at a disadvantage. You'd start with 8+1 in the gun with 2 8 round magazines which on a 18 round stage you're reloading twice when others reload once.

However, there are 10 round magazines available for the P239. They stick out a bit but are legal (just need all 3 magazines to match, use one of the 8 rounders for your 'barney mag' to load the first round for each stage at the load and make ready command).

Exactly the answer I was looking for. Thank you. I haven't been able to confirm whether or not the 10-rounder fits in "the box".

Something else to consider is your purpose for participating in IDPA. Cater what you run with to what you are trying to accomplish.

Are you looking to try to be a competitive shooter? If so, yes, the 8-rounders would be a disadvantage. Go with the 10 rounders or a larger gun that has a longer sight radius.

However, if you are just looking to improve your skills using your firearm in a defensive manner, then it doesn't really matter. "Run" with what you run with. If you are going to be carrying an 8-round mag in the gun with a couple spares, then the more reloading you do in IDPA, the more practice it will be. Also, if you will only be carrying the handgun with no backup mags or you, then go ahead and bring the 10 rounders. They'll make you more competitive and it really doesn't matter if you get good at reloading or not.

They should, the extra grip length isn't that much greater than the length on my P226 and you get to use the whole box meaning if it fits in and the lid closes regardless of how you position the gun in the box its legal.

I'm not incredibly competitive. I really just want to have a good time, hone my skills, and maybe not come in last. I'm a decent shot with stationary targets in a range scenario, but have lots of opportunity to improve otherwise.

My question about the Sig was really to evaluate whether or not I need to practice up the G19 in order to hang in the IDPA.

i haven't done it yet, but it looks like I have three options within 30-40 minutes of my house.... zanesville, Circleville, and West Jefferson. I'll likely do West Jeff since it is the closest.
