Of these two rifles, which would you rather have and why????

What made you decide on one rather than the other?????

I had a 556 ordered before the very first batch even shipped from the factory.

Once shooting reports started to come in I canceled my order.

I wanted a Sig rifle, not a modified piston AR, not at that price.

But to be fair your comparison is a bit off. Bushmasters are middle of the road ARs.

If you're gonna compare top end brands you need to compare more like Colt to Sig, LMT to Sig, etc.

I wouldn't buy either, but I voted for the Bushmaster since the AR15 is a proven system. I'd spend the same amount of money and buy and LMT or a Smith and Wesson. If you are dead-set on ordering the bushmaster, order it from Grant at gandrtactical.com as he does some basic work on Bushmasters that the factory should do, but doesn't, that will greatly increase the rifles reliability.

I have a SiG 550 .. But I prefer my AR platform (M-4 clone) over my issued Sig...

The 556 for me is a nonsens.. the only good thing about it is to allow STANAG mags...

I think that an AR-15 with a gas piston (or a HK416) would be much better.

I put together (lego style :) ) an ar15 because it was 400-500 dollars cheaper than the sig. However, I do plan on getting a sig556 one day. It's like an ergonomic AK that takes stanag mags. Pretty cool.

Dangit, Shung, why ya gotta do that?! ;)

I wish we were given the option of a 556 (let's call it the 556 Classic) identical to the 551/2, with the only difference being the STANAG mags. Gimme that, and my vote goes to the 556.

I'd buy a Colt 6920 over either, although it looks like SIG might actually be finally "getting" it with the 556. The rifle they released initially was a dud.

i said the ar and especially the bushmaster. i have experience with about every model and i have been nothing but impressed, i have owned 2, the one i have now i love and is totally set up the way that i want it. the first one i had was great also but it was an a2 reciever and i wanted a flat top so i sold it and got the a3 that i have now.

also i have been around the ar alot not only my time in the army but before then too, i know the weapon system and i know how to run them hard, maintain and manipulate them better than any other rifle or long gun there is.

the sig is neat and all but i would rather have another ar then to get a sig 556.

parts and accesories is a big deal too. parts can be found everywhere, and there is a huge selection to choose from with the ar.

It'd be a pretty boring hobby if everybody collected guns based on parts availability.

Went with the SIG because I liked it better and I found one for a good price, will probably buy an AR one of these days to go with it. Will probably buy another SIG as I like the Commando model..... Is it perfect? No, but what rifle is?

Wha? You find that a gas piston 550 is harder to clean than a direct impingement M4 carbine?

IME, it's considerably easier cleaning a 556 than an M4, and less necessary.

Dont know about the 556, but for the 550 its a pain, YES. you have to clean the gas tube, the piston head, and also the inside of the valve.. and to do it well, it's long, and boring. The bolt carrier/bolt assembly is ok..

Less necessary, maybe, but i'd clean my M4 twice the time I need to get a clean 550... And I dont clean the M4 bolt carrier/bolt that often..

(remember that we are teached to clean the 550 after each shooting.. )

While I haven't yet put both a 556 and an M4gery through a several-thousand-consecutive-round torture test, I strongly suspect that religious scrubbing of the gas system is unnecessary. On the other hand, I think you'll find quite a few shooters who will argue the necessity of keeping an M4's bolt properly cleaned and lubed up. Plus the pain of carbon build-up, scrubbing out the corners of the chamber extension, etc. Give me a 55X any day.
