I'm posting this because as a new Sig owner I'm curious if others are aware of company policy. Owning several S&W handguns and having shipped three back for repair, at NO charge, I was surprised at SigSauers return policy. First, I noticed a NIB warranty is guaranteed for 1 year. Yikes! Plus, they have no toll free number to call. I know Smith does. S&W sends you a shipping label for Free S&H to the customer. Sig has you mail the gun to them, it cost me $74.00 UPS overnight; and place a $100.00 inside the packaging to cover return S&H charges back to me. What's up with that? Maybe I should have stuck to buying another Smith. I bought the Sig because it was a used LE P229 (9 years old) and the trigger felt better than a new Smith. However, it had function problems at the range, so I shipped it off to Sig. Maybe Sigs are quality firearms, but S&W has me spoiled with the free customer service number and free S&H. If Sig doesn't fix it the first time, I can't be dropping $150.00 for shipping and long distance phone calls. Very doubtful I'll buy another Sig. The longest S&W repaired and returned my handgun back to me was eight days. The shortest was four days. Lets see if Sig can beat that. Oh well, I've vented. Hopefully it will all work out (for the money).

I would vent your problems to them. I have never had a single problem with any of my sigs over the years. However I have purchased parts from them in the past and during one transaction they went out of their way for me. To keep you a happy customer I would suggest to them that they kick in some magazines free of charge.

I had to send my P226ST back for a warranty issue. FWIW, if it is a warranty repair they will send you a check to cover your expenses. Send them an itemized list with receipts.

I am not trying to be a smart a$$ here but what’s the problem. I could understand if you purchased a new gun that had problems and got stuck with shipping both ways. But buying a 2nd hand gun 8 years after the warranty has expired. If you bought a 9 year old ford and took it to the dealer for repairs would you expect it to be free?

I was not aware that was SIG's policy. That will make a diference on my next purchase.

Feeding problems with a 9 year old used LEO surplus firearm?

If I owned a firearms company I'm not sure I would warranty that either.

Yes, other firearms companies might have better warranties, there's no arguing that, but to say that this somehow out of line is a stretch given the history of the weapon. SIGs warranty is published up front, so it's not like any of this happened on the sly.

Warranties are to guarantee that a manufacturer has not made a defective product, not to promise to fix everything that might break or wear out.

Would you take a 9 year old Chevy with worn out tires and battery to the dealer and demand that it be put back in new condition free of charge?

And, besides that, why would you send a 9 year old firearm back to the manufacturer for feeding problems?
Don't you have a local gunsmith around? Somehow I don't think it would have survived 9 years as an LE weapon with factory caused function problems.

I don't know if S&W does repairs of used guns for free. At least, it doesn't say anything like that in my owner's manual .

That said, my experience with S&W service has been very, very positive. If I ever get a 1911, it'll be a Smith, just because I know they back up everything they make.

S&W is pretty good at this. they'd send you some UPS label, shipping expenses paid both ways. $74 for over night is steep. it only costs me about $40 for sending the heavy P220ST back to S*g. And that's even from CA, it should costs even less from OH to NH.

You're sending what might be a badly worn USED service pistol back to the factory for repair.

Ruger might be nice to you, with a USED GUN, and Kel-Tec will, and CZ has been known to be kind ot owners of used guns (some, not all), but darned few other gunmakers will cover costs of repairs (or shipping) on USED guns.

Smith & Wesson does and Taurus does they have lifetime warranties on the guns not the first purchasers.

I've had used guns from S&W and Taurus repaired at the factory

They've been very reasonable on repairs, but I've never had them pay shipping. (Nor have I had Ruger pay shipping.) Maybe I didn't scream loudly enough?

I'm not trying to be a smarta$$, but if you'd shipped a Glock back, regardless of its age or whether you were the original owner, Glock would have fixed it free and shipped it back to you, overnight, freight-paid. ;)

Sorry, but I don't think there is any reason to expect a manufacturer to warranty a product not owned by the original purchaser outside the stated warranty period.

Sig is in the business to sell firearms. They make no profit when you buy a used pistol from a private party. I don't believe it's reasonable to expect them to warranty a product you did not purchase directly or via their distribution network.

Not always. I've seen a number of folks have to pay for some stuff that was broken or worn --especially if it was shooter negligence, etc.

Routine stuff will be repaired without questions -- and going to a Glock shoot is a great way to get your weapon upgraded or repaired free of charge -- but Glock won't automatically fix everything free of charge. And it won't always pay (or reimburse you) for shipping TO the factory. (If its a true warranty problem on a new gun, you're in good shape. Otherwise, you might be surprised.)

Interesting responses. The ONLY point I was making is I was unaware of Sig's policies regarding S&H. I was passing it along to other potential Sig buyers. I know the gun is used. I'm just use to S&W taking care of everything new or used. Even something as simple as a 1-800 number to call. I've done it several times at Smith and talked to one of their tech guys. I like the Sig...I just don't know how the company competes with others regarding happy customer service after the purchase. They must know, guns breakdown and need service.

I was about to post the same thing. S&W will do the same as well. Sig is behind the times with their "warranty". This isn't the first time I've herad somebody not happy with Sig's service. This is one of the reasons I got over my Sig phase in short order.

Sig emailed me a prepaid fedex label to return a gun.I just printed it out and put a letter in the box with the problems. They replaced the slide and had it back in one week.

Sig will email or fax you a USP shipping label if you ask them. You don't have to pay the shipping for warranty work.

Plus the "1 year" thing is crap ... SIG will always fix their guns if they fail before their reasonable service life.

I have heard stories of SIG replacing frames on guns much, much older than 1 year because they just shouldn't have broken.

Unless Sigarms changed it, brand new Sigs have a lifetime warranty while CPO Sigs have one year warranty

I bought two new S*gs this year, they carry 1 year warranty.
HK has lifetime warranty.

by the way OH25shooter, if you post this story in sigforum, you are the bad guy. ;)

Oh, no doubt. I'm just stating facts. I mean no harm to the actual product. Just their customer service needs to be upgraded to the present day.

One time I built an FAL and it didn't work right, so I had to send it back to myself, shipping to an FFL, overnight, the works. All in all I'm six hundered bucks in the hole and my gun still doen't work.

I wish I had bought a used range gun from sig....

Let me get this straight...You purchased a 9 year old used firearm and you're upset that the company won't spend $100 to ship and return it back to the factory for you?

I can't figure out why anyone would expect a company to pay for shipping on repairs after the warranty has expired? If you purchase a used automobile and have problems do you expect the manufacturer to fix the car at no cost? Of course not.

I own 8 Sig handguns and the couple times I've called Sigarms Customer Service they have been very responsive and helpful. Firearms are mechanical devices that wear out with use. Expecting a manufacturer to cover shipping on a used gun of this age is being unreasonable in my opinion.

Also, long distance is as cheap as $.029 cents a minute now. Is it really that big of a problem that they don't have an 800 number? Let's say yours is as high as $.05/minute a 10 minute call would only be 50 cents.

Sig's are fantastic handguns and they have some of the best customer service in the industry. If you were concerned with a warranty you should have purchased a Sig Certified Pre Owned which comes with a 1 year factory warranty and then they would have covered shipping for you. I don't know of any gun manufacturer that will pay to ship a used handgun of this age. I've dealt with many over the last 20+ years and have always had to cover shipping on old/used guns.

Lastly, the price of shipping is mandated by UPS and FedEx so your post should be complaining about them not Sig. UPS and FedEx require you to ship the handgun overnight at huge costs. If UPS and FedEx didn't have such silly shipping rules on handguns and the prices were more reasonable I'm sure all gun manufacturers would be more willing to cover shipping costs.
