I'm considering getting either the p229 or p226 classic 22, and then a caliber exchange kit for .40 S&W. From what I understand, the classic 22's are either the p220, p226, or p229 frame with a .22 conversion kit. Is the .22 kit worth it? I know .22 pistols can be hit or miss, so I was wondering if it would be useful or just frustrating.

This route would cost me maybe $100 or so more than just buying a p226/9 in .40, but would save me money if I decided to put a .22 conversion on it later.

I bought a 229 in .22LR. Mine is fussy. It runs fine on CCI Mini-Mags. I have had stovepipes and failures to feed with other ammunition. On the other hand, some owners report that their kits run fine with .22LR bulk packs.

the two-step package is a great deal...i paid $300 for the conversion kit for my 226ST

the conversion kit is well worth the money as it gives you the ability to get used to your trigger for a lot less expense.

i only run CCI MiniMag in mine as recommended by the owners manual and it has been flawless in function. be aware that there is no hold open device after the last round. either keep track of how many rounds you've fired or get the follower from Sig Power...besides catching the slide after the last round, it increases mag capacity to 15 rounds
