I am looking into getting a Sig 226 in 9mm in the near future. Are the Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Sigs a good deal? If you could get a "low-mileage" Sig (not CPO) for $100.00 more than CPO, would this be a better value?

Grade 1 CPOs can be had for $550.

Often the grade one guns are refinished. Most CPOs are low round count guns. Not to knock cops but they are carried more then they are shot.

If you can inspect the gun prior to purchase is always best. I would not pay more for a non-CPO gun.

If you are looking for a CPO there are a lot of quality guys over on the Sig forum. Ron at Eagle tactical and Jerry at Ordance outsellers can set you right if you have a good transfer dealer.

Get a Sig you will like it.

Yeah mine had very little wear. I have put the majority of the wear of the pistol myself. Very reliable pistol by far my favorite to shoot because of the light expense of the 9mm ammo. Very good pistol.

I bought a CPO P226 that was a grade-one and looked like it had never been fired. The gun was immaculate. The advantage to buying a CPO over just plain used is that the 'smiths at SIG replace everything in the gun that can possibly wear or weaken. Every spring in the thing gets replaced. Turns out, mine was made in West Germany in '89 ( I bought it around 12/05 for $550) and I just love the thing. The trigger is great, was what sold me on the gun. The finish is flawless, and is definately the most accurate gun I've ever shot. I rented dozens of guns before settling on the SIG and I just couldn't find anything as comfortable and accurate. Sig reliability is legendary.
Do it, buy it, get the CPO, you won't be sorry.

I agree the that CPO program is great but you are over stating what is done to the guns in the factory.

They replace only things that are visibly worn, defective or broken. They are function tested and away they go. Yes they replace things like springs but unless the weapon was in really bad shape when it was turned in it is no better then the average used Sig. You do get a 1 year warranty but I have found that Sig stand behind their products and even if you are the second owner and you have a defect they fix it period.

In the end like I said get a Sig no matter how you aquire it you will love it.

I have a P226 9mm CPO of 1989 make.
When I had FLD order it I did not specify finish and was surprised to get a two-tone. Just what was on top of the stack. It has one light scuff on the nickel slide, a couple tiny nicks on the black receiver, and some wear on the grips.

The recoil spring was very heavy and slide lock on empty was kind of occasional. I think they put in a .40 spring on the refurb.
The sights were way off. I think they put in the standard height sights for the model to replace faded night sights without checking zero.
Sigarms sent me a new recoil spring and rear sight and it is now a good shooter.
It is going to get better, I am going to send it to Bruce Gray tomorrow for setup as an IDPA SSP gun.

I am surprised the CPO program has not completely knocked out the ordinary second hand Sig-Sauer market. You get at least a cleaned, inspected, and warranted gun in a new box, versus grimy tradeins at the usual store. Some CPOs have been refinished, some rebarrelled.

I hope you have better luck than me finding one. I just went to my dealer and tried to get a 229. He called SIG and they said you wont be seeing any from them for awhile. They have none available and are concentrating on new guns at the moment.

Seems Ordnance Outsellers is having the same problem my dealer is too.

I guess if you see one floating around, grab it.

I found my CPO P229 at a gun show. I've also heard good things about CDNN but don't have any personal experience. They don't have CPOs but their used pistols are supposed to be a good buy (their current catalog has P229s in in .40 or 357 Sig for $389).

Bought my CPO 226 exactly 2 years ago (June '04). Prices for these guns was higher then, so I didn't get an especially good deal, but the 226 is a June 1995 model and it has been flawless since I got it.
