I was working my way through my normal practice drills this afternoon, when I noticed a problem. My recently acquired 229 E2 doesn't quiet lock up in my hand under rapid fire like all my other pistols do. From svelette 9mm 1911's to slab sided USPs and Glocks (even a Beretta 92) I've never had a gun that I can't get both hands to lock in tight on the grips.
For whatever reason with my 229, I can either (A) get the meaty palm portion of my off hand to fill in on the grips, or (B) I can get a good tight finger wrap. I can not find a happy medium currently. If I go with (A) my support hand thumb bounces all over the place when I shoot rather then aligning in a good thumbs forwards grip. I haven't actually seen a decrease in accuracy from this, but it can't be good. If I go with (B) I basically squeeze the blood out of the strong hand with my support hand trying to hold onto the gun under recoil. I'm debating going back to the standard grips and a short trigger, as that ought to give me the same trigger reach at least with maybe a better chance at getting my support hand where it needs to be, how it needs to be.
Any suggestions on aftermarket grips, etc?
