As I understand it, any of the stamped-slide guns (228, 226, 225 (?)) have german parts; the stamping machinery is expensive and has not been reproduced in the US AFAIK. The more recent offerings such as the 229 and 239 with carved-from-stainless-billet slides are US made.
Another thing I noticed was that some Sigs are marked as being made in W. Germany. Do these pre-date the fall of the Berlin wall or are they all marked that way regardless of date of manufacture?
West German marked SIGs are from the pre-1990 to early 1990s period. SIG continued using left over West Germany parts after 1990. Check the proofmarks to find out the date your German SIG was made.
The stamped slides are less corrosion resistant than the stainless slides. Stamped slides are only for 9mm SIGs and they're also 1 oz lighter than the stainless 9mm slides.
In the early days of SIG's cast slides, were they ever made by Ruger for SIG? I've heard this bit of info over and over and never got much beyond gunshop\forum rumors on it.
A bit late to chime in, but if you have a serial number you can call SigArms (603-772-2302) and they'll give you build date and other info on a particular firearm. I've found it essential for purchasing used Sigs, especially when night sights are installed. Don't want to pay for night sights that are too dim to use.
