Happy new year all ...

And now to my problem. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the gouge out of the barrel steel on my new Mosquito. See photo. Here are some facts:

1. The gun shoots fine and I have had ZERO problems with it from day one.
2. I've used only CCI Mini Mags, nothing else.
3. There is a total of about 400 rounds through the gun.
4. I've never noticed anything unusual while shooting.
5. I clean her after every trip to the range.
6. The gouge is 2mm long, 1mm wide, and less than 1mm deep

Questions:

1. What caused the gouge?
2. Do you see any safety issues using the gun as is?
3. Would you bother to send it back? (I'm strongly leaning in that direction).

THANKS in advance for your help!

It's probably just a cosmetic issue. I wouldn't go through the hassle and expense of sending it back if the gun shoots fine. Is there a chance that you caused it somehow? Any rough handling?

And by the way, the gouge is on the slide, not the barrel.

shouldn't affect anything at all except perhaps your pride. That being said...take the sharp edges off and blue it to keep it from rusting.

That's about it.

1. No way to tell. Could have been a number of things.
2. No.
3. Heck no. I can't see Sig doing anything about a little mark like that, especially when it's almost certainly something that occurred through no fault of theirs. It's basically a cosmetic issue, as Ohio Rifleman mentioned. Save yourself the hassle.

And by the way, the gouge is on the slide, not the barrel.

Incorrect. The slide is removed in the picture. That mark is on the rear of the barrel.

Rifleman,

I can see how at first glance you thought the gouge was on the slide, but check out the photo below. The Mosquito barrels are mounted in a fixed position. Red arrow points to gouge.

Anyway, thanks for everyone's input ... but I wonder if this clarification photo changes anyone's opinion ...

Root, welcome to the forum. Not trying to be a wise guy, but I doubt your Mosquito is a safe queen; I know mine isn't. I'm not sure what caused the nick as the breakdown and re-assembly is straight forward stuff. It's one of the things I like about the Mosquito, along with the decocker and second strike capablilty which comes in handy with rimfire ammo.

Before you send it back, why not call Sig, talk to a customer service rep and ask if they would like to see the pix you took. (Very good pix.) Attaching them to an email might work for them. Speaking only for myself, I'd be wanting to barter for a couple mags vs. fixing the nick. Once again, welcome. Let us know what happens.

Is the barrel also made of steel? The reason I ask is that it appears the barrel itself is sleeved into a barrel shroud assembly. If so, the barrel shroud may be made of a lighter weight alloy, and could be subject to showing more dents and dings than an all steel one. I think benzuncle has a good idea in you sending your pix along with an email to SIG, asking for clarification of the marks and what they would be able to do about it.

Thanks for the clarification, that did look like the slide in your first pic, with the slide locked back. I'm not really familiar with the Mosquito design, it's different from the regular Sigs. Anyway, as others have pointed out, maybe email them with your photos and see what they have to say. They are some very clear photos, by the way.

Hmmm?????

Just my two cents... and *disclaimer* I'm not a gunsmith, but I have shot a ton and only a couple of things come to mind....

Did you ever drop it? or bang it against something while CCW? or similar "abuse" (harsh word, I know, but that's how the company will refer to it)

Poor workmanship (e.g. a Sig problem with that casting or the metal "mix" they order/ brittle)

OR (my biggest suspect).....did you rack the slide or run the slide release a bunch with no ammo in it?? It looks to me as if it may have taken some hits from behind like that and chipped, and often if there is no ammo there to buffer it as it goes into battery (thinking out loud)....... Just a thought......
