Sig Mosquito or .22 Conversion Kit for 226?

Never held the Sig Mosquito, but do have a 226. Was looking to go .22 cal for practice and both are about the same price. Does the Mosquito weigh as much as the 226 with the conversion kit? I'd like to keep it as realistic as possible.

My Mosquito runs just fine. But as a rule, they are picky about ammo, need to be kept squeaky clean, and benefit greatly from a little internal polishing. They are a boat load of fun to shoot. Take a look at this thread:

You said it better that I, for sure.

I didn't feel like waxing on about the countless range trips trying to get the Mosquito to run without hiccups, so I just summed up my personal experience.

You may get a good one, or have the time to polish the guts hoping to chase away the demons.

I would get the conversion unit. The Mosquito, with its smaller size, slide safety and different trigger pull characteristics, does not feel or operate the same as the P-series. With the conversion unit, the only thing you would not be able to duplicate would be the recoil.

I have conversions for my P220 and P229. They run great. There's a gent that makes some different parts for them, too. Guide rods and magazine upgrades so they hold more than 10 rounds. I've never had a problem with either.

I have both the Sig Mosquito and a 22LR conversion kit for my Sig 228.

I wish I never bought the Mosquito - it is SO picky about ammo and jams (FTF or FTE) maybe 30% of the time.

The 22LR conversion kit runs well and has had only a 2 or 3 jams (FTF or FTE) in about 200 rounds shot.

I have had no issues from my Mosquito. However since the OP wants cheaper practise for his 226 I would get the conversion. Same trigger and controls as the full sized gun.

Another option is the 226 already in 22LR. Advantage would be having a complete gun that mirrors your centerfire without having to swap parts over. They can be found in the $450 range. Another benefit is if your 226 is in say 9mm and you wanted a 40 or 357 Sig, you can then add that top-end to the 22 frame if desired.

I am on my second Mosquito, made a big mistake and sold my first and ended up buying another. They are fine, just use the CCI mini mags as suggested, once you get 500 or so rounds through it then you should be able to switch to a "quality" bulk type of ammo. I use the Federal with no issues, stay away from lead bullets though as they may not feed all of the time, although good for malfunction clearing drills. Being the majority of our guns are Sig's I wanted the same feel and grip angles. You can't go wrong either way.....

I really like the Mosquito; totally reliable with CCI Mini Mags, mostly reliable with bulk Federal (I have over 3,000 rounds through it). Tremendously fun to shoot; my wife likes to practice with it as well; full size gun without a lot of recoil (though it does have some "flip" which I like, makes it feel like a bigger gun).

I would stick with the conversion if you already have the 226.
The Mosquito is a fine gun as long as you use steel magazines and CCI Mini Mags, though. Mine hates the plastic magazine I got it and every other kind of ammo. Virtually flawless otherwise and the new digital white pattern looks really sweet. I saw one at a gun show a couple weeks ago and I have a feeling my wife is going to want to buy one..
