I was planning on buying a new Sig P220ST but I keep reading about reliability problems on the Sig forum. Which one should I get, the regular or the ST? I will use it for the range and home defense, not for carry. Thanks.

I have the ST just for that reason. It would be heavy for carry but for plinking, range time and HD it can't be beat. I have several hundred rounds throuh mine with no issues. I also put laser grips on it and have a sure fire in the wall safe beside it. I tried their weapon mounted light but didn't care for it. For a pistol I don't think you could do better. I highly recomend it.

P220 reliability problems, while overall quite rare it seems, are usually attributed to a bad extractor. I don't think the material of the frame would have anything to do with this. One would probably be as likely as the other to come from the factory with a good or bad extractor.

Speaking soely on behalf of the standard world class SIG-
SAUER P220A with the blued aluminum frame, I have put large
quanities of rounds downrange without a single hiccup of any
kind. I can't address issues that may involve the SIG P220ST
model, as I've never handled (or fired) one; cuz I'm completely
satisfied with my West German .45 caliber P220A.

My brother has a 220st - not sure if it is typical or not but it is a nice gun, accurate and reliable. Cut above in the carry genre from where I sit, but also a bit more expensive.

I have a P220ST, and had the extractor problem. My understanding is that it was due to a bad run of extractors from a supplier, and affected P220ST's manufactured a little more than a year ago. Only the extractor is the issue, nothing major in the slide or frame.

From what I've read (and my experience), IF you have the bad extractor you'll know within about 500 rounds. If you do have a bad one, SIG will of course repair it under warranty and even pick up the shipping. I took advantage of that free shipping to have their custom shop do a trigger job and some other work while it was there.

In short, I wouldn't let fear of getting one with a bad extractor stop you from buying one if you're interested in them. If you even get one with the problem, SIG will definitely take care of you with their fantastic customer service.
