Hey guys,

I posted a thread a few days ago requesting info on the Sig P220. I again would like to thank all those who responded. I guess this is going to be a short story involving me and a new toy that I picked up. I also have a few questions for those out there that are avid Sig owners, carriers, and shooters.

Like I said in the last thread, I did not pick up the older Sig that I was eyeballing at a local gun shop due to the high price. Later that day, I took a trip to several gun shops that were out of town. The first shop I went to has an awesome selection of pistols and rifles, but I will not be going back to it ever again due to the owner's attitude and general rudeness to his customers.
The second shop that I went to didnt have any pistols that I liked, and really didnt have any decent pistols in stock. The third shop I went to is a Sig Arms dealer, and had a lot of new Sigs in stock. I am a regular at this shop, so when I go there, I am immediately acknowledged by the staff, which I like because the staff at the shop are really good people that want to help you.
With out even speaking a word to one of the staff, he produces a Colt commander and hands it to me. I told him it was nice, but I was there to look at Sigs. He looked at me funny and went to the Sig case. I told him I was interested in the P220 . The guy lays out four Sigs: P220 , P220 Equinox carry, P220 Elite carry, and a P220 Platinum Elite. I fondled them all, but my hand kept going back to the Platinum Elite. My hand was saying " ooh, look a beaver tail , feels like a 1911". Upon further fondling, I discovered that it also came up on target like a 1911. It had night sights, which were adjustable. The trigger was awesome.
I liked the P220 Elite Carry, but I like full sized pistols, so it was either the standard P220 or the Platinum Elite.........I ended up walking out with the Platinum Elite.
There is not much info about the Platinum Elite online. The stuff I did find was the general bashing on the Platinum because it looks like a pimp gun. It does look like a pimp gun, but I like it for what it is....to each his own. I plan out getting rid of the aluminum grips as soon as I find some that will fit the Platinum Elite series P220. In the future, the pistol will probably see a dura-coat/cerramacoat finish because the aluminum frame is already showing wear from being in a holster. The rail is also showing some wear from my TLR-1 weapon light. I dont keep the light on the pistol , it is what I call my "nite lite", I leave it on my night stand gun at night so when I wake up to the "bumps in the night" I can grab the gun and not worry about forgetting the light because it is attached.
The next day, some friends and I went to a private range and began shooting. I was eager to shoot my new Sig, but I was also apprehensive. I have shot about three sigs in my life time, a Sig P220 , P229 , and a Blackwater P226. I remember them shooting great and very accurate , but I dont remember there being anything about them that would appeal to me in the sense to make me buy one......but there was something about this platinum elite...something special. I finally got up to the 20 yard mark and loaded the sig. Eight rounds downrange, all headshots on the steel paladin target. Recoil was oh-so smooth and sweet. It reminded me of shooting a
9mm. Brass kicked out at 5 o'clock and in a small pile. I was in love.
On to multiple engagement drills at 5 and 10 yards. Again, the platinum elite shined. I was worried about transitioning from glock/1911 to the sig, but doubts vanished after checking the targets , two nice COM hits on both targets, both hits were very close together ( my pairs are usually more spaced apart). I was suprised at how smooth and quick the trigger was. All my best friend could say was " I told you , but you didnt listen....welcome to the dark side". He is a Sig fan, so it was only natural for him to rib me about not discovering them sooner.

I have a few questions, forgive me if they are dumb, I am new to the Sig.

Do any of you know who sells either rubber grips or micarta grips for the Sig P220 Platinum Elite ? I have tried both the finger groove hogues and the slab hogues and none of them fit. I am wanting to get rid of these aluminum ones pretty bad, although there is nothing wrong with them , they do the job, just not a fan of the color.

Is there anything special on the Sig , as far as maintainence goes, that I need to be aware of ? ( i.e. oiling, wear, etc).

If any one out there that owns a Sig P220 Platinum Elite can tell me how well theirs is doing, I would appreciate it. I know that the Platinums havent been out too long, any info would be appreciated.

How do the aluminum frames hold up long term ? I am familiar with the 1911s and have read that the aluminum framed 1911s do not last as long as the steel frame.

It isnt the best pistol in the world, but I like it. I guess I am a Sig fan now LOL.
