Anybody else attempted to shoot the 220 SAO with this hold? I held one in a shop yesterday and it dug into my second thumb joint pretty fiercely. I get along well using this hold with my TDA 220 since rounding off the tang. On the SAO, however, that won't be an option as the safety is pinned through the tang too far rearward.

Anybody else contemplated or wrestled with this dilemma?

Yep, well, sorta I bought a 1911 instead becasue I couldn't reconcile the placement of the slide release on the SAO and my hold. I don't like engaging the slide release before I mean to. Shame really, that Sig looked nice.

I've yet to shot a P220 SAO, but I shot a SIG X5 which I'm sure is similar since i thas a thumb safety also. Shooting the gun didn't prove to be a problem since I hold the gun high thumb also, but I did run into the problem of releasing the slide on the last shot each time.

Thats the only gripe with SIGs, is the slide stop position.

Still though, I'd rock a X5, or a P220 SAO anytime.

I found the SIG easier/more comfortable to shoot than say a Milspec or Colt Government with the short thumb safety and traditional grip safety. :)

NineSeveN, Black Majik ...

I say if you love SIGs, then dremel off the tab portion of the slide stop leaving just a mm or so protruding: enough to catch the slide but not enough to gouge your thumb or enough to inadvertently depress. From what I gather, SIG slide stops aren't intended to be used as slide releases anyway, so the only intended purpose of the tab portion would be for manual locking of the slide. The remaining mm would probably still be just enough to serve this purpose. If not, then the insertion of an empty mag certainly would.

My 220s--a DA/SA and an SAO--are still new enough to me that I haven't yet determined if the slide stop position will be an issue, but if so, I won't hestitate to cut off the tabs.

After about 10 years of shooting pistol and longing for 220s for the past five years but passing on them due to the slide stop position issue as well as the lack of beavertails (the X5s are "more" gun than I am looking for), I've just reached the point where I'm willing to cut off the dang slide stop tabs and round out the portion of the tang that gouges my thumb's second joint and to just bask in SIG nirvana ...

If I didn't love my 1911 so much, I might do just that...and I still may in the future should a SAO 220 find the way into my collection. :)

Old thread, but...

I haven't fondled the P220SAO yet. I was thinking that this may be my next purchase, but this very issue popped into my head because I use a high thumb hold.
The "pressing the slide lock inadvertantly" issue isn't a big deal and I would have no problem altering the shape of it. This happens when I shoot XDs and I can deal with it.
The "digging into my thumb" issue concerns me though...

Dang.

Sig P220

I own a Sig P220 Elite SAO. I bought it before I knew it was SAO. I thought all Elites were DA/SA. Well, I kept it and I'm glad I did. This is a sweet shooting piece and I have none of the issues discussed here. I have only put about 300 rounds thru it but so far I have no problems. I will say this, the gun was very accurate right out of the box but accuracy deminished after about 50 rounds then it improved about 200 rounds and now shoots better than ever. I never thought a 45 would be so much fun to shoot.

I have the same problem with my 228. Love the gun, but the frame does push against the base of my thumb something awful with my parallel thumbs grip.

I love the gun enough that I'll deal with it, but I wish I could adjust the tail on the frame by a millimeter or two.

i would suggest that you are over-gripping with your thumb. this isn't a 1911, let the thumb "float" atop the base of the support thumb

I got rid of my 226 because I had to use a different hold on it than on my glocks/1911s. Fine guns, but I'm not learning a new grip just to use one of my pistols. Plus the DA/SA bugged me. An SAO would be intriguing if I could reconcile it with my grip.
