Sig P290 Owners Only - check in

Two P290RS' (avoid the P290).
Only issue is that they don't like hard primers. Occasionally have misfires w/PMC FMJ and once w/GECO FMJ.
Trigger (DAO) is acceptable for close-in SD but won't win any target matches, not anywhere near as smooth or light as on the SIG P250 (also DAO).
Inherent accuracy is very good if I do my part, shoots like a larger pistol (btw, the P290RS has the usual SIG "combat" sight picture instead of the more common 6 o'clock hold so don't be surprised if it seems like your hitting low).
Recoil w/115gr loads is very mild, tolerable w/heavier std-pressure loads (haven't tried +P). I carry 135gr Critical Duty for consistent penetration w/some expansion even through the P290RS' 2.9" bbl.
I much prefer the extended 8rd mags as they afford a full grip whereas the shorter 6rd mags provide max concealability.
Galloway Precision makes a 22lb recoil spring & stainless guide rod that I like. I find the heavier spring brings me back on target quicker for faster followup shots.
They also make a performance spring kit that does a good job of lightening the pull.

Avoid the early-model P290 at all costs! Mine originally had a non-restrike trigger that often failed to reset, and magazines frequently popped out under recoil. Some P290's have been fitted with the resriking DAO trigger, and may be OK. I had my P290 so upgraded (at my expense), but the magazines kept self-releasing. After two return trips to SIGARMS, it was replaced with a P290RS which has been totally reliable through nearly 1000 rounds, including 115-, 124-, and (mostly) 147gr. ammo.

SIGARMS may have successfully addressed the P290's problems in the P290RS, but doesn't seem to be pushing the model. Magazines and holsters for it are not commonly seen at the gun shops I visit, where other SIG models seem well supported. The P290 is more compact than most of its competitors, though a bit heavier. Ironically, it is sometimes sold with a SIG-rebranded plastic paddle holster that totally defeats the P290's compact dimensions!

My experience with my unlamented former Kahr PM9, and Beretta Nano were far worse and never resolved, despite two return trips (each)to the manufacturer. SIGARMS made significant modifications to address their initial problems, where Beretta and Kahr refuse to even acknowledge theirs.

Fortunately, I amost never have to resort to carrying less than a Glock 27 similar to those I carried for years as an off-duty and backup piece before retiring from one of the three-letter Federal agencies (no, NOT the TSA!).
