I've wanted a Sig for a long time. They point for me better than any gun I've ever held, and they look pretty too. (Yeah, I know.)
So, I went to the gun shop, and started looking at some P220s, and then a Sig pro. The guy behind the counter steered me toward another one; a little more expensive than the one I first looked at, but he recommended it because:
a) He said it was a good gun - it was (allegedly) his personal gun while he was with the local PD
b) It had night sights (well, he didn't steer me toward it because of this, but he pointed it out and it was a selling point)
c) It came with an extra mag (the other didn't)

So, after much deliberation, I purchased it. Hand-cycled rounds through it all weekend, been working in the leather on the holster, practicing my draw, mag changes. You know, the fun stuff you do with a new gun.
Brought it to shoot today. Fired 4 mags (12 rounds ea.) through it. After each and every mag, the takedown lever had walked out, to the point where it locked the gun up until I dropped the mag and moved the slide to push it back in. Needless to say, this is not going to be my new carry gun.

I am...not quite appalled, but it's kind of close. I wondered about the takedown method when I first saw it, but I figured if Sig designed it that way, it can't be all bad. It looks like there's a spring that's supposed to keep tension on the takedown lever, so maybe that's loose. I don't know, I'm just upset.

I don't know if I should a) send it in for repair, b) take it back and get one of the other sig pros (I really like them, takedown lever aside) or c) take it back and get another sig, perhaps a 220 Compact, or 245.

OK, I'm done ranting, thanks for listening.

swap it out.. if that one has the same problem, then send it back in to SIG and tell them to repair it..

I have very bad experience with SIG Pros and SIG 2340s. As you suggest, they tend to rattle apart when you shoot them. Get the 220 or any of the other metal guns.

"He said it was a good gun - it was (allegedly) his personal gun while he was with the local PD..."

If it was so good, why did he let it go?

I would contact Sig and ask about sending it in for repair. I have a 2340. It is a great weapon.

While I respect your opinion, I find it to be in the extreme minority. For every one bad experience I read about with the sigpro, 10 other people rave about theirs.

+1 SigPro

I've carried my SigPro 2340 off and on for the last four years. I have several other options to choose from but come back to it for how great it shoots.

Now with any great company it is possible to get a lemon.

I'd take it back to the shop for satisfaction, just to get the sour taste out of your mouth. But I'd insist they give me a 2nd Magazine or some other sweetener since those were the selling points on this one.

If not that they contact Sig. Their CS is GREAT and I know they'll take care of you.

My department have been using the Sig Pro for the last 9 years in .357 sig. Over all we are happy with it. The take down level you mention I assume it the slide catch that need to be removed to take the pistol down. When we first got the pistols they were very hard to get out I really didn't like it and wish they would of let me kept my Beretta but the powers wanted a (better round) thier words not mine. Well shortly after the level began walking out on a few of the pistols. Our range master found that some of the deputies took a file to the catch and make it a little thinner thinking it would come out easier. Just an ideal may want to replace it can't cost much and see what happens. The weapon does point well and the few shootings we have had it have performed as intended. If you get it working right I think you will be very happy with it.

Be safe

Send it off to Sig and they should make it right. Their customer service is pretty good. And learn a lesson from this: Every gun sales man has owned every gun at any time, and it was his favorite gun. Amen.

Can I ask what dept you work for? I wasn't aware any US depts issued the sigpro. Nice to know.

Yes, someone on another forum indicated that their department also issued Sig Pros - don't remember if it was Defensive Carry or Sig Forum. THey mentioned another officer was having the same problem, replace the slide stop/pin and the problem was solved.

I have no doubt in Sig's ability to take care of the problem, but a) I'm impatient, and b) this is intended to be my new carry gun, so I'd like to walk out with a gun that shoots like it's supposed to.

Either way, I'm going down to the shop in a couple of hours, to see what they'll do for me. They have several others in stock, so maybe they can cannibalize another to make this one right, or I'll trade it in and grab another similar one.

I work for N.C.S.O in south Texas. when we began testing we had a new Captain that was retire Highway patrol. they just recently went to the .357 sig in i belive the p226 the pro's were offer to us and i think $150.00 less then the p226 since the boss was buying 100 of them he went for the pro to save money which i can understand if it was me buying a weapon for myself i would spend a couple of hundred more and get the classic sig of course everyone budget is not the same.

Sig Pros do have a bad rep as well.

This is whats wrong with the "errornet". Misinformation.

Thats funny, because about 95% of the people who own sigpros would likely disagree with you. They(sigpros) in fact enjoy a high reputation for build quality and reliability. Head over to the sigforum and ask around. I have personally owned 2 of them, one resides on my hip whenever I leave the house.

Perhaps your bias for "plastic guns" as you say has clouded your judgment a bit?

Kinda reminds me of the "sig snobs" who look down their noses at the pro because its not a traditional metal P series.

Apparently plastic pistols aren't so bad. Glock, HK, Smith's M&P, and Springfield's XD all seem to be selling quite well. :neener:

Thanks for the info Sheriff.

Really, how so? I've read exactly the opposite, but if you have other verifiable info please feel free to share with us.

The most common comment I hear about Sig Pros... "It's the most underrated gun Sig makes".

OK, so here's a happy ending:

I went back to the shop today, brought the gun back to the same guy who sold it to me. Apparently the gun did have another owner between him and me. He took it apart and looked at it, and found that the TD lever/pin retaining spring was in fact out of spec. He put it back, re-assembled, and handed it to me. I could definitely notice the difference on the retaining spring - it was harder to push the pin out.

However....while I was waiting for him to finish with the spring, I browsed around and found another Sig Pro they had in stock. It was a 2022, so it had the Picatinny rail, rather than the proprietary (read: useless) rail, another mag, and the other grip. All for $65 less than I paid for the old one. In addition, the TD pin was even harder to push out on this one, giving me even more confidence it wasn't going to walk out. I ended up trading them in. I think it was win/win. I got a newer gun with more accessories, for less, and someone else will have a gun that should function properly.

Here's a phone number that you SHOULD call

Sig Sauer
18 Industrial Dr.
Exeter, NH. 03833

(603)772-2302 ext. 3111 (Customer Service) hours of Op. 8am-4pm EST (-3hours for Cali./ 5am-1pm)

They should be able to help you, I know the guys that work in the custom/repair shop and they are all really great at there jobs all of them are repairmen and at least two of them are Certified Gunsmiths. You can't go wrong with that.

oops I guess I gave you that information a lil late, BUT it's always good to have in the future in case other problems arise. So enjoy your SIG PRO 2022 and keep in mind what I have given you incase.

PS. write the information down and keep it with you pistol case so if you need it it's there and you won't have to go back through 20pages of forum board to find it. That goes for all of us, except me I work here.
