Sig question

Just curious. What's the difference between the Sig 228 and the Sig 229 (in 9mm)? They both seem to be semicompacts with 13 round magazine capacities. I know the 228 accepts 226 magazines; does the 229?

Did Sig Sauer discontinue the 228? They don't have them on their website. Odd, since I know that Army CID spooks carry them.

The only thing I noticed while perusing my new Sig239 owners manual (covers the 228 & 229 as well) was that the 229 appeared to be noticeably heavier, and I THINK wider too. Otherwise, it was dimensionally the same.

229 doesn't use the stamped slide its milled,so as to stand up to the recoil force of the 357/40 rounds,the 228 is still made but has been moved to the blue line,supose to mean Cops first and Feds.

228: Stamped/folded carbon-steel slide, full-height slide serrations, 9mm caliber only. Better overall balance and a slimmer profile. Not discontinued, but reserved for LEO and military sales. Overruns make it to the civilian market.

229: Milled stainless slide, half-height slide serrations, 9mm version does take 226 mags, and high capacity 228 mags are interchangeable, 9mm/40S&W/357SIG calibers available. More top-heavy than the 228, but beefier to take the pounding of the 40/357SIG calibers.

Both are excellent weapons.

the 228 was designed as a 9mm. the 229 was designed as a .40. they were so similar in size that sig found it redundant/confusing to have both in their main line.

for the 9mm chambering, the 228 is the more efficient package
