Sig Sauer P220 Question

I used to have a P220. I miss it. Best gun I ever owned and I would buy another with absolutely no hesitation. It's the AK of handguns. It will fire every time, period. It is also very accurate and handles recoil very well.

If tomorrow I had to leave for a new frontier and enter the unknown with only one pistol, it would be a Sig P220. I can't recommend this pistol enough.

I have a p226 and i did own a p220ST. In my experience Sig makes the finest semi auto in the world... for me. I shoot them faster and more accurately then anything else sans my single action revolvers (and double action fired single action). They are rock solid, accurate and well designed.

I sold the p220 because the all stainless was a bit heavy and it had the "troublesome" external extractor (which never gave my problems). I am in the market for another p220 in either sa/da or DAK form.

These are also not to big for carry, get a decent holster (like a UBG IWB) and wear an over shirt and they disappear. I have also concealed a Ruger redhawk before, which takes some real effort to do. The p220 is like a pocket pistol comparatively.

If it fits your hand, go for it and enjoy.

The P220 is always a great choice. Have you ever thought about an H&K pistol? H&K has some nice .45s to offer with the quality, reliability/durability, and accuracy right on par with Sig. Condition 1 carry is also possible.

To be honest, I'm a little surprised you had bad luck with your XD. The XD(especially the .45) is one of the best pistols out there right now in my opinion. XDs have a reputation for quality and reliability comparable to a Glock, and I would say that next to the Glock they are the best selling polymer pistol in the $500 range. If I could only have one .45 forever, it would probably be an XD .45 compact. It's a shame you didn't have a good experience with yours.

Some of the later models with internal extractors had numerous FTE issues.
The new, new models with external extractors seem to have solved the above stated problems.
Lots of threads available in numerous forums discussing the above.

For sure, there's been a lot of hype in cyberspace regarding the merits of internal vs external extractors but I think much of it is bogus. A general consensus on the "net" seems to be that SIG corrected functioning problems with the original (internal) extractor by revising it to the current external configuration. I have serious doubts about this conclusion. The 220 was introduced in 1976. Did it really take SIG thirty years or so to "fix" a defect in the 220's design? It's my opinion that the recent move by SIG to employ an external extractor was nothing more than a manufacturing expediency.

Then you hear how much better the 220s made in West Germany are compared to the ones made in America. Invariably, the people making this assertion own German-made guns and claim to have experience with pistols from both countries of origin. Again, I'm very skeptical about the veracity of these accounts and claims.

Certainly, my experience with 220s having external and internal extractors and, to a somewhat lesser degree, my experience with German-made guns (I've only had occasion to shoot one of these) suggests that there's no significant difference between any of the variants in question.

I have a P-220 SAS with the DAK trigger system, which is Sig's take on double action only. It is a comfortable to shoot, very accurate, totally reliable but rather large to conceal. Very fine firearm. There are always plenty in the used market...that's where I found mine

I'm very interested in getting a P220 this Xmas, but man why did they have to have to make it so dang difficult by having so many trigger options.

DA/SA, DAK, SAO, SRT. C'mon now, Henry Ford it for pete's sake!

Nickle Sig P220

Summit Gunbroker has the Old school ,stamped slide, Nickle P220; factory refurbished for $575. I've been workin real hard to come up with a rationalization to get one; maybe that's "wrong thinking" ! Anyway ;that's a great pistol, in nickle, to boot!

I have a p220 and love it. It is kinda heavy and the grips may be too big if you have smaller hands, but as far as reliability is concerned it has been rock solid, and the recoil isn't bad either. I wouldn't trade my sig for anything!

What's with a stamped steel slide? I see people posting as though that's a plus feature but it makes me think of Tonka Toys or something. Guns have forged steel parts.

If a stamped steel slide IS an advantage I'd be interested in hearing the reason why, or did Sig make other slides that were cast parts making the stampings an improvement.

I mean.......whas up wid dat?

Do you realize that a stamped steel slide IS a forging?

A flat piece of steel is put into a very large press, and cold-firged inro the rough shape of a slide. Then it is finished machined.

New Sig slides are machined from bar stock. With todays amazing machining centers, it is most likely a cheaper way to make a slide

My first 45acp was a Sig Sauer P220 Compact. It is a keeper. I am not interested in a rail, and I love the beavertail. I am a fan of SA/DA and a nicely placed decocker. The Sig Nite Sights are also a nice feature. I have small hands; it fits me perfectly. I carry it in a Maxpedition Jumbo Versipak and, if I will be standing or walking a lot, a Smart Carry. It is not the lightest 45 on the market but its reliability and accuracy are legendary, with good reason. I know of people that own 5 P220's and would not part with any of them. Of course, there are others that feel the same about "their" brand of firearms. There are a lot of people out there that would like to own a Sig Sauer 45 but haven't arrived yet. Good luck to you. If you choose a Sig 45, you won't disappoint yourself. I still smirk and smile everytime I shoot mine.
