I have a SIG P229 9mm (no rail) W German model from about 15 years ago and wanted to get a stainless brother for it. I see SIG has released the E29R-9-SSE which is a new stainless model. On paper, it is what I want.

Are they any good?

Does anyone know if my 13rd mags will work in it? I'm not sure if the newer SIGs are a different generation or not.

I know they made a different one about 10 years ago. Would that be more desirable for any reason?

No, the magazines for your older generation SIG 229 will NOT fit the E2 SIG pistols.

But, I do have one of the "enhanced" E2 pistols in 9mm and .45 ACP, and I can tell you that the SIG quality is still there -- the new grip shape feels even better than the original SIG grips (still arguably one of the most ergonomic grip shapes out there) if that's possible. These new SIGs are just as reliable, just as accurate as the previous incarnations.

By the way, if you're still running the old 13 round mags for your 229, you may want to pick up some of Mec-Gar's stellar 15-rounders (and you can even get the Plus-3 Optimum versions too). They're actually much less expensive than the SIG-branded mags, yet Mec-Gar is OEM for SIG and many other manufacturers. Mec-Gars are the best mags out there, IMO.

I've got a boatload of the 13rd mags already, some pre-ban. I want to keep that investment, so I might not want to buy this new pistol.

Thanks for the heads up.

Your W.German 9mm 229 had a narrower magwell opening to use thinner 9mm magazines.

SIG, with the introduction of the E-squared models (229-1), standardized the magazine width to that of the 357SIG/.40 magazines.

You narrower mags should fit into the newer 229-1 frames, but the newer 9mm mags cannot be inserted into the older frames. You'd have to function test your mags in a 229-1 frame to see if it will work.
