I just started my collection off recently and shortly after i bought a Mosin Nagant 91/30.Im already in love with it but i have a question. But since this is going to seem like a stupid question to you all let me just say I know more about facts of guns than little details. So please dont flame me, Im just starting off. On the iron sights the numbers for range, do they go by tens or what? again please dont flame me.

After you answer this question i would like to know if you guys think if i should get a scope or not.

First things first: welcome and congrats on your new purchase! I don't own a 91/30, but generally speaking the numbers indicate one of two things: (a) the range at which you're trying to shoot, in 100s of meters, for coarse sights or (b) the minutes of angle (MOA) or 1/60th of a degree for fine sights; for scopes you'll get sub-MOA units (1/4 MOA, 1/8 MOA, etc.).

To answer the question about irons or a scope, I say IRONS, IRONS, IRONS! Marksmanship is a skill that requires lots of practice and incredible precision. While scopes are useful, make sure you know the fundamentals before you move on to optics. The greatest rifle on earth is worthless without a good shooter pulling the trigger. Good luck!

thnx i figured since it was russian it would be metric but i still dont know if its by tens or what. it goes from 1-20 so i assume its by tens...

Yeah, like I say, I don't know crap about Mosin's, but typically its in 100s of meters. 10s would be way too fine of an increment for irons.

While the 20 (2000m) is EXTREMELY optimistic for a 7.62x54R, that's kinda the old Russian style. For example, typical AK sights go out to 1000m, even though there's no way in hell the round could effectively shoot at that range.

I wouldn't bother getting a scope for a 91/30. Your limiting factor on accuracy will probably be the barrel, not the sights.

yea i was thinking the bullet is a bit heavy for that range but up until then i guess it is pretty good.
