I'm curious that with all the threads about gun oils, silicone is not included. I have some silicone impregnated gun socks, why don't people use silicone on their guns?
I think if you wipe your guns off periodically, you will be fine. Always wipe them off it you shoot them or handle them much. Everyone claims that 3-1 oils (light machine oil) are bad, but have used them for years with no ill effects.
If you use Break Free it has PTFE; check the label . Outdoor gun range where all kinds of guns are rented out in South Texas approx 7 miles from the gulf the poor guns are lucky get wiped off maybe a couple of times a year and get some Break free squirted in them once a week. I have looked at several and can't believe how well they have survived on the Break Free diet.
I always avoid using silicone because it seems to get into everything and won't completely go away. I also avoid using PTFE in some applications, especially wherever fire is involved (such as gun barrels) because I don't like the idea of burning plastic (even if it's really no big deal practically, why not avoid it altogether?). I just have no need for them since there are alternatives that are just as good or better.
For obvious reason I would agree with brboyer but besides the fact that the company I work for makes and sells ZCORR bags I'm a fan of not having to wipe extra oil off my gun before using it. VpCI bags allow you to simply pull a clean gun out of the bag and use it immediately.
I stoped using silicone years ago. Had water beads on the cloth and wraped a T/C barral with it. Ended up with a few spots. I only use New Finish 2000 on all my blued firearms. Synthetic auto polish. Haven't had any problems for many years. I use it on my vintage winchesters, S&W's, anything blued.
