January 4, 2004 -- Silk and Steel: Women at Arms by R. L. Wilson, Random House, 336 pages, $60

SOME of my best life experiences have been in the African bush with my .308 Steyer Scout rifle, my grandfather, a tracker and a professional hunter.

Now comes R. L. Wilson's beautifully illustrated volume, "Silk and Steel: Women at Arms," to say that, in fact, women have been shooting for generations.

Queen Victoria, Madonna and Liz Taylor are all "recreational shooters." And Eleanor Roosevelt carried a concealed weapon after being threatened by the Ku Klux Klan for her appearances defending civil rights.

Dedicated to the "millions of women who have mastered the captivating world of firearms and know the great pleasure of marksmanship and wilderness adventure," this book is for all the women, everywhere, who support the shooting sports and are working to preserve them for generations to come.

A book that needed to be written.

Males have never had a monopoly on shooting. As exhibit B, here's part of the dedication from "Spirit of the West", a cookbook of old west recipes.

"Grandma Cox was a frontier woman who rode horses, presided over tea parties, and shot rattlesnakes with equal aplomb..."
