Silly Garand misconception.

I'm looking through flashkit.com for sounds for a website I'm developing and I come across gun sound effects. The description for one of the sounds is "M1 Garand firing with little bell ringing that lets you know it's time to reload".


I just that that was silly.
 
That sound is about as distinctive as the sound of a pump shotgun slide if you know what it is.
 
I've had people say "something just flew off'a his rifle" when my Garand ran dry... now I know what to tell 'em... "yeah, that's the little bell that tells me when it's time to reload.":D

...which you'll be able to hear quite clearly after eight 30-06 blasts.
 
My grandpa used to talk about that sound. Said even with a machine gun going next to him that was the loudest sound on the field.
 
A Marine friend of mine told me a long time ago that they did that to the Japs on Iwo Jima. Toss a clip against a rock to get the enemy to expose while taking aim. Then they'd pop em.
 
You think that's bad? This isn't really related to the Garand...but:
I was posting on a game forum...someone modded in an M14 with a scope. I got it in game and liked it. Noticed that it only fired semi auto.
I posted and said that maybe he could make it fire full auto normally, and semi auto when looking through the scope.
Now get this...one guy started arguing with me that the M14 was NOT select fire and that I must be thinking about the M1A. >_>
He even went so far as to message me through Xfire and continue the argument. This is after I've linked him to several websites, including World Guns (<3 WG!).
While chatting, I kept repeating: "No, the M14 is select fire. The M1A is basically a semi automatic version of it." After saying that a few times, he busts out "AHA! SELECT FIRE, WHAT DID I TELL YOU? IT'S NOT FULL AUTO ONLY!!" (Where'd he get that anyway? I explained what I meant by select fire many times...)
I got the distinct feeling that he realised he had been disproven and that he thought that his buddies (we were in group chat) might start thinking he was a bit slow. =)
So of course, he banned me from the chat. :D

EDIT: Man...watch me turn out to be wrong. *sweats*
Anyways, just found this little tidbit on Wikipedia:
During the Korean War, American soldiers supposedly used this sound to their advantage, noting that the enemy would pop their heads up when they heard the clip sound, and would carry and throw empty clips as a tactic.

That really doesn't make any sense. I seriously doubt that the sound is coming from the clip landing on the ground. :rolleyes:
Clips can also be manually ejected at any time. The "en bloc" clip is manually ejected by pulling the operating rod all the way to the rear, and then depressing the clip catch button.

Yes, there's a button on the side that manually releases the clip if the bolt is fully retracted.

Sounds like you need to get to a range for some M1 familiarization immediately! :neener:

I figured that it was the metal on metal making the sound, but I'll believe you. =D
And I've been reading more about the Garand on Wiki...stupid video games lying to me. =(
And I've always prided myself on not getting my gun info from games.

A wise choice! ;) One of my favorite gun mistakes in a game is in Counter Strike: Source, can't remember if it's the same in the original, with the M-4. When you reload, the animation puts in a new magazine, then pulls on the forward assist to "charge" the weapon, instead of the charging handle. :D

The metal on metal sound is more distinctive, but I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference during a pitched battle.

Patience + saving money = guns! Three years ago I had no guns, but with the magic of saving and a C&R license I've got quite the little collection going now despite 2 of those 3 years being destitute college-years.
 
Nice website. Edit: Just noticed the "Be sure to dry fire it to relieve the hammer from spring tension" bit...

Counter Strike error: I noticed that one a while back...freaked me out, jaw dropped, etc. But that was back when I still played CS. =) The constant firearms errors and just the way the game was played made me too sick. I quit several years ago. My life has been better ever since. =D

Buying guns: Currently I am unemplyed but about to begin the last semester at my local tech. I'm majoring in HVACR repair. If things go well I wont have to save up for too long before I can afford my first handgun (Probably a CZ-75) and good rifle (Maybe an SKS or an AR...hadn't thought about that one much.) Already own a Remington 522 (...) and a Winchester 1400 :)D).
 
An AR15.com member, DVDTracker, has an online store known as Life, Liberty, Etc. On it he has posted some field strip videos, including one for the Garand (which happens to show the clip ejection button.) I'd rather not link directly to the video, so here is the webpage where you can find the download. Do a search for "M1 Garand" as it is towards the bottom of the page.
 
M-1 clip

The "ping" sound when an M-1 clip is ejected is caused from the vibration
of the thin metal arms of the clip. It's the same principle as the tuning
fork. The "ping" happens the instant the clip is ejected, not because it hit something.
Ejecting a clip with some rounds still in it will not create the "ping" sound.
The arms of the clip must be free to vibrate to make the sound.
Now, I'll admit I've only been shooting an M-1 for about 25 years,
so I'm a relative newcomer at it, but that's what I've been told, and
I believe it to be true.

You can't hear the ping in combat. There's far too much noise.
"...posting on a game forum..." Most, but certainly not all, PC game players are teenage boys and have never seen an M-1 or an M-14. Never mind fired either. PC games are full of firearms that the programmer had never seen anywhere but in a book. Games do let you do impossible things though. Like dive bombing in a Lancaster.
 
Went to an indoor range today where I could off hand my Garand. Rang the um "bell" 3 times. MAN, does that thing like to shoot! And all of the pistol shootin' younguns at the range took immediate notice. BEFORE the "bell".

That 30.06 kinda gets attention indoors..... (didn't make them think to pick up their spent brass or their targets, but did sort of stop them in their tracks and start the questions...) They did seem to know what weapon it was...

Okay, I had a blast!! (It was the second time I had fired my Garand. The first time was in a "rifle tube" from a bench rest.... OFF hand is WAY more fun!)

BTW MBS: Military M14 could be select fire, but most were modified to keep them semi-auto. Civilian models are almost all (with just a few exceptions) semi-auto and most are still called M14. M1A is SA's model of the M14, and not always semi auto.
