silly gun-banners crack me up again

Gun-banner ignorance is a source of endless amusement for us - or rather, it would be were not the stakes so high. They consistently make the most ludicrous errors that are obvious to those of us who know something about firearms. We all know that they confuse machine guns with semi-automatics, refer to magazines as "bullet stocks," confuse and conflate assault rifles and "assault weapons," and generally make it up as they go along.

Doing a bit of research I found yet another howler, this time from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. On 5/21/03 the newspaper published an editorial calling for renewing and expanding the AWB. Assault weapons belong off the street, under a ban
The newspaper informs us that "Adolf Hitler was so delighted with the lethal capability of the new gun presented to him by his ordnance designers during World War II that he dubbed it the 'Sterm Kever' -- or assault rifle." First, Hitler didn't even name the rifle - the inventors of the StG44 gave it its name. Second, the German word is "das Sturmgewehr." Whatever dumbass wrote that editorial for the AJC heard the word and didn't even bother to find out how it is spelled.

I was going to cut and paste parts of the article to point out how STUPID it was.... then as I read more and more I realized that I'd be cutting and pasting almost the entire article.

Yes, it's pretty obvious that whoever wrote that article was winging it most of the way and making up the rest. But then I'm sure the writer has some sort of college education and therefore that makes him smarter than the rest of us.

They also don't mention that Hitler initially didn't want the StG44-the designers hid it's true nature from him by calling it the MP (Machine Pistol) 44, in keeping with Hitler's mania for machine pistols (submachine guns). It was only after the generals were clamoring for more of the new Sturmgewehren (and Hitler initally didn't know what they were talking about) that the subterfuge ended.

I find it ironic that they point out Hitler, the head of a government, liked assault rifles or machine pistols, with the apparent inference that anyone that likes MPs is like Hitler.

He was a brutal dictator that disarmed people and then committed genocide. Then started a World War through aggression. Through force of arms.

Brian, above the title, it says "our view" which i think is meant to imply that it's a staff editorial.
In the article they say something like 1/4 of cops killed in 2002 were killed with assault rifles. Of course they got the statistic from the VPC. Aren't they the same ones who talk about assault weapons and define them as any semi-automatic firearm when spewing their bs statistics.
And how the hell does an inanimate object "murder innocent children?"

Gun folks love to chortle over the stupid mistakes of the anti types, but do you think they care? It's like me when I act like I never heard of the latest teen rage. My kids roll their eyes and can't believe how stupid poor old dad is. But ol' dad doesn't care, he thinks it's all garbage and is showing his disdain in his own way.

So you get to feel superior because Michael Moore refers to cartridges as "bullets" or some stupid writer doesn't know the difference between a magazine and a clip. You can laugh about it next time they pass another stupid law.

A polite letter pointing out errors MIGHT get some traction, but I seriously think that most folks just know guns are bad and an inordinate amount of proof will be required to refute the mistakes, bad facts, and outright lies from the anti-gun activists. Guilty until proven innocent.

They'll probably think you're a Nazi when you point out the errant reference in correct German.
