I was watching YouTube this afternoon and one of the guys was showing some rounds that he claimed were jacketed with 99% pure silver.

Can anyone tell me what the purpose of such a round or is it just a novelty?

If it exists, it'd just be for novelty sake.
Unless I'm severely missing something, I can see no practical benefit whatever.

Only used by Werewolf hunters.
And the Lone Ranger.

Winchesters old Silver-Tip ammo wasn't.
The silver shield over the tip was actually Aluminum.

Never heard of whatever he thinks he is talking about.

Winchester does have a whole line of established commercial ammo called silvertips where the jackets appear silver

Nope, the guy stated explicitly that the rounds in question were not Winchester Silver Tips.

He said they were jacketed with 99% pure silver.

So, I'm going to assume that these rounds are simply a novelty item. I have no reason to assume the guy is lying

He may have been referring to "Laser Cast" Bullets which are cast lead bullets that have some silver in them - supposedly to prevent barrel leading. I have handloaded them & they actually don't lead the barrel at higher velocities.

They could be made as a novelty and would probably work something like a solid, but would sure be hard on a barrel. The bullets could not be swaged into their final dimension and would have to be cast. The casting would have to be something akin to lost wax or investment casting as the melting point of silver is way too high to be done with a conventional molding process.
Just not practical to be a pure silver product....but they could be plated.

Well the advertising says a silvr 99% pure jacket . Should take the same process as making copper jacket bullets.

The chatter indicating that silver was north of $30 and oz must be smoking something as it has been hanging at about 1/2 the numer for some time.

$30 bucks for 8 rounds is not cheap but then not out of reach either.

Seldom have I incountered more than a couple creatures reguiring a silver bullet to dispatch so 8 rounds will go a long way.

I'd only want one for my collection. To go alongside my wooden projectile round and my 'Kryptonite' projectile round. So that way I could kill a Werewolf, a Vampire, and Superman.

Silver jacket is possible...but they are probably just plated with silver. It would be a very thin jacket probably something like normal plated bullets, but with silver. It could be done that way but it would just be a marketing gimick...no practical use.

Just a novelty item. They're sold in a blister pack of 8. You're just buying something goofy to hang on the wall, or as a novelty gift.

Eight rounds of Coonan Silver Bullets plus the ash vampire stake will cost you $49.95. Sure, it ain’t cheap. But, since silver is well north of $30/ounce now-a-days, they simply cannot be made cheaply. Nope, there is not an ounce of silver in the package, but I imagine Coonan and Atomic likely went through a pound or two in the load development.

As stated, gag rounds like this:

The silver ones are possibly thinly electroplated with pure silver. The electricity to plate them probably costs more than the silver deposited. Just keep them away from sulfur-ey things like eggs, or they'll turn black.

However.... as Hornady said in their ads... "Just in case."

And I kept my box of .223 ZombieMax cartridges.

Just in case.

I'm catching up on old episodes of Game of thrones and Trueblood over the long winter. Looks like I need both.

Just in case. I should get some of the Hornady ammo as well as these silver tipped ones. :D

Just like the mint with their "GOLDEN" dollar coins. There ain't no gold in the Sacagawea dollars, and there ain't no silver in those bullets. Even the Lone Ranger wasn't fooled by that.

I recently inherited a bunch of old military surplus rifle ammo, and there was a clip with silver-looking .30 cal bullets on them. After some inquiries, it turned out they were tin jackets over hardened steel cores.

Not that it makes a big difference but the package is labeled that the jacket is .999 pure silver. There is no reason to suspect otherwise as it is technicaly very doable, and the material cost of that small amount of silver would not exceed their pricing by any means. At todays silver price a grain of silver would run about 3 cents. We're talking about a thin silver extruded jacket .

Place where I worked could silver plate copper buss bar. I silver plated a few copper bullets just for show.

"...You forget vampires..." Silver bullets are anti-werewolf only. No use on vampires. The Lone Ranger used pure silver bullets because he had a silver mine. Ya'll need to upgrade your useless information subscription. snicker.
"...Just a novelty item..." Yep and likely produced when silver was nearly worthless.
