I love simple archery (eg, no hunting, no competitions, no fancy accessories on the bow). It's relaxing and gratifying to know I have an alternate weapon system. I shoot a traditional, 'naked', 45-pound composite recurve, which I've owned since I was 17. For those who want to round-out their martial skills, simple archery is viable option. I highly recommend it.:)

Simple Archery?
I've been flinging sharp sticks for over 40 years. I assume you mean "traditional" ie. recurve or longbow?
I'm just not sure about the "simple" part. even the traditional longbow can get complicated.
sights on a bow are like underwear,
some folks like 'em but they are optional.

There is a Zen quality to traditional archery that isn't quite met with other shooting sports. I have both a longbow and recurve, and have found great satisfaction when shooting both "instinctive". My messed up rotator cuff prevents me from practice these days, and eliminates hunting with the bow before I could give it a try - sigh -. :(

Yeah....I guess I meant 'traditional'.

It's great. I tried a compound bow once and couldn't hit jack with it. It felt weird, so I went back to my stick. I have a long-bow, but don't like the hand-shock. The recurve works best for me. The optimal replacement weapon for a gun would probably be a super-powerful, super-accurate compound, but I don't like them.

I studied Kyudo (Japanese archery) and....

adopted some of its principles. They helped a bit.

Simple or traditional or primitive or whatever you want to call it, Ramon is right.
Shooting alongbow over a green lawn on a nice spring evening is a great way to relax.
It's even more relaxing using just one or two arrows, taking time with each shot and re-centering yourself as you walk back and forth to the target. Good stuff.
